The finished ceiling is the part everyone sees at Te Rau Mātāpuna o Taranaki.

Behind it were shop drawings, samples, service coordination, revised details and a close working relationship between Featurecraft, Warren and Mahoney and Alpha Interiors Waikato.

Our shop drawings brought the different battens, panels, curves and junctions together before manufacture, using site information supplied by Alpha.

A lot of the work disappears once a project is installed. That is generally a sign the coordination has done its job.

One of the more specialised details from Te Rau Mātāpuna o Taranaki.

For the Tūpāpaku Viewing Room, Featurecraft manufactured a series of individually sculpted Southland Beech battens that curve and step to form a circular feature in the ceiling.

Tīhei contributed the cultural notching to selected batten edges.

A small part of the wider project, but a great example of how much can be achieved by working a familiar material around a very specific architectural detail.

Same Southland Beech palette. Two different ways of achieving Group 1-S.

For the panels, Southland Beech veneer is pressed onto fire-retardant black MDF.

The solid timber battens use an intumescent coating followed by a clear finish.

The technical solution changes, but the natural timber character remains consistent across the finished spaces.

This is the sort of detail that should look easy once it’s finished.

Southland Beech veneer pressed onto fire-retardant black MDF creates the flat ceiling panels, which then transition into curved bulkhead faces throughout the project.

To make those curves work, Featurecraft pressed the same veneer onto bendy ply, with the exposed panel edges clashed to follow the geometry.

Different constructions, one continuous timber finish.

The Main Entrance Atrium is the hero space for our battens on this project.

Southland Beech runs across the ceiling in a large, repeated arrangement that gives the entrance a strong timber presence without making the space feel heavy.

The solid battens achieve Group 1-S through an intumescent coating and are finished with a clear coat to retain the natural character of the timber.

New Zealand native Southland Beech runs right through the New East Wing at Taranaki Base Hospital.

Solid battens, perforated veneer-faced panels, curved bulkheads and finished edges all use the same timber palette, even though each required a different manufacturing approach.

The end result is a material that feels consistent as you move through the building, while still allowing each ceiling area to do something different.

A project we’ve been looking forward to sharing.

For Te Rau Mātāpuna o Taranaki, the New East Wing at Taranaki Base Hospital, Featurecraft manufactured over 3,000 lineal metres of solid Southland Beech battens and more than 600 m² of veneer components.

From the Main Entrance Atrium through shared spaces across the building, the package brings together battens, perforated panels, curved bulkheads and custom timber detailing.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a closer look at some of the work behind it.

Choosing a finish is often one of the most enjoyable parts of an interior project.

The next step is working through how that finish will be used, how it needs to perform and which laminate format will best suit each application.

With HPL, LPL and compact laminate available within the Featurecraft range, those decisions can be considered together from the beginning.

This may include looking at wear, moisture exposure, cleaning requirements, board or panel thickness, edge treatments, adjoining finishes, fabrication and sample availability.

It does not need to feel complicated.

The Featurecraft team can work with architects, designers, contractors and joiners to compare suitable options and help bring the specification together as the project develops.

The aim is to make the journey from an initial material idea to a practical, well-resolved interior feel clearer and more supported.

A well-resolved interior is usually made up of many different surfaces.

Cabinetry, counters, furniture, wall linings, partitions and work surfaces may all have different practical requirements, but they still need to feel connected.

Featurecraft’s broader laminate range makes it easier to approach those elements as part of one overall palette.

LPL may suit cabinetry and storage, HPL may be introduced across higher-use joinery and counters, while compact laminate may provide the right solution for partitions, work surfaces or slimmer-profile details.

Where selected finishes are available across more than one format, the material construction can change while the visual direction remains consistent.

This helps create interiors that feel more cohesive and considered, rather than assembled from unrelated finishes.

Exact availability varies between formats, so early review can be valuable. The Featurecraft team can help compare options and bring the different elements of the palette together.

Every project brings its own character.

Some spaces call for warmth and familiarity. Others feel best with a quieter, more restrained palette. Some need stronger colour or a more architectural expression.

The Featurecraft laminate range has the breadth to support all of these directions.

Across HPL, LPL and compact laminate, the collection includes solid colours, timber reproductions, stone and material-inspired decors, subtle neutrals and a wide range of tactile surface textures.

That variety makes the range suitable for many different settings, including workplace, healthcare, education, hospitality, retail and other commercial interiors.

The strength of the collection is not simply in the number of finishes available, but in the way those finishes can help shape very different project outcomes.

Whether the direction is warm and natural, calm and refined or bold and expressive, there is plenty to explore.
