One building, with timber taking on a very different character from one space to the next.

At Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre, natural battens bring warmth to the café and common areas. Decor Planks wrap the café counter. Darker routed battens define circulation spaces, while perforated Hoop Pine veneer creates a quieter treatment within community rooms.

Inside the auditorium, the scale changes completely, with timber battens and custom chevron panels forming a major part of the architecture around the stage.

From warm and natural to dark and graphic.

At Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre, the character changes noticeably as the café and public spaces transition into circulation.

Natural timber battens give way to a darker treatment of black stained battens, with a lighter patterned element of Birch plywood creating contrast against the black surfaces.

It is a relatively small transition within the building, but a clear shift in atmosphere.

The use of timber changes with the space rather than simply repeating the same finish throughout.

A quieter timber treatment inside Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre.

Perforated Hoop Pine veneer panels extend across the walls of one of the centre's smaller community spaces.

The fine perforation creates a much more restrained surface than the battens used around the café or the large-scale timber treatment inside the auditorium.

It is another example of the same project asking something quite different of timber, with the product and level of detail changing to suit the character of the room.

From close-up detail to a 400-seat auditorium.

At Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre, natural timber battens frame both sides of the stage, with custom veneered plywood chevrons integrated into the wider treatment.

The repeating pattern is CNC-routed through the panels, with black felt behind the openings adding depth and contrast.

At close range, the machining becomes the focus.

Move back through the auditorium and the same detail becomes part of the overall architecture around the stage.

One of the most distinctive elements within Featurecraft's package for the project.

A warmer expression of timber at Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre.

Natural timber battens run through the café and adjoining common areas, moving from vertical wall treatments into overhead soffit and ceiling areas.

At counter level, Featurecraft Decor Planks wrap the curved café/bar front, while the same natural timber character continues into the recessed seating alcove nearby.

Rather than relying on one isolated feature, the timber is used across several surfaces to help shape the hospitality area as a whole.

At Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre, Featurecraft timber changes character from one space to the next.

Natural timber battens wrap through the café and overhead areas, with Decor Planks carrying that texture across the curved café counter.

Move into circulation and black-stained timber creates a much darker mood. Elsewhere, perforated Hoop Pine veneer lines wall.

Inside the auditorium, the material moves to a completely different scale around the stage.

One building. Very different spaces.

Featurecraft's work at Te Puna Mahara | Cromwell Memorial Events Centre extends through the café, public areas, circulation spaces, community rooms and 400-seat auditorium.

What changes is how the timber is used.

Natural battens bring warmth to the café. Decor Planks wrap the café counter. Darker timber defines circulation spaces, while perforated veneer creates a much quieter treatment elsewhere.

Then, inside the auditorium, the scale changes completely.

The finished ceiling is the part everyone sees at Te Rau Mātāpuna o Taranaki.

Behind it were shop drawings, samples, service coordination, revised details and a close working relationship between Featurecraft, Warren and Mahoney and Alpha Interiors Waikato.

Our shop drawings brought the different battens, panels, curves and junctions together before manufacture, using site information supplied by Alpha.

A lot of the work disappears once a project is installed. That is generally a sign the coordination has done its job.

One of the more specialised details from Te Rau Mātāpuna o Taranaki.

For the Tūpāpaku Viewing Room, Featurecraft manufactured a series of individually sculpted Southland Beech battens that curve and step to form a circular feature in the ceiling.

Tīhei contributed the cultural notching to selected batten edges.

A small part of the wider project, but a great example of how much can be achieved by working a familiar material around a very specific architectural detail.

Same Southland Beech palette. Two different ways of achieving Group 1-S.

For the panels, Southland Beech veneer is pressed onto fire-retardant black MDF.

The solid timber battens use an intumescent coating followed by a clear finish.

The technical solution changes, but the natural timber character remains consistent across the finished spaces.
