After our fantastic Job Shop manager Shae Clarke was offered the opportunity of a lifetime with the NZ Airforce, we are now looking for a new Job Shop Team Leader and customer services champion for our busy Machine Shop in Hastings, Hawke's Bay.

This role is the face of our business for local customers and the first point of contact for many of our national and international customers. The role is responsible for leading and managing the Job Shop area of We Can Precision Engineering Ltd. From quoting work, materials knowledge, managing suppliers and outwork, building customer relationships, quality management and providing training to our group of apprentices, the role requires a high level of machining experience on a range of manual lathes, mills and other Job Shop machines. CNC experience is useful, while the right 'We Can' attitude is essential.

This is an opportunity for a mechanical engineer early in their career wanting to move into a leadership role, or for a highly experienced tradesman who has practical experience and wants to be part of a leading precision engineering team.

What a year for our Apprentice Josiah Barlow! In October he won the Bill Buckley Engineering Scholarship at the annual Maintenance Engineering Society of NZ Inc awards then three weeks ago he was announced as the Central Region winner of the ATNZ Apprentice of the Year awards. Finally, at a celebratory awards lunch in Auckland on Tuesday this week, he was the very proud recipient of the overall 2025 ATNZ Apprentice of the Year, proudly sponsored by NZ Safety Blackwoods.

We are immensely proud of Josiah and all that he has achieved with us and look forward to his development as an important part of our team in the future. As a major trainer of mechanical engineering apprentices for 54 years, with 3-5 training at any time, We Can knows these apprentices are the best way to invest in our future industry. Well done to Josiah and his fellow apprentices, team mates, peers and mentors that have all invested in him through support and training on the floor. Our future is bright with engineers of the caliber we strive to train at We Can.

After 6 years at We Can, our Office Manager is off for a new adventure! We are now looking for our next star to manage our busy precision engineering office based in Hastings, Hawke’s Bay.

You would be responsible for ensuring the smooth day to day running of the We Can Precision Engineering admin and accounts office functions. Your attitude, energy, flexibility and humour will be at the core of the business and will contribute to making this a great place to work.

Huge Congrats to We Can Precision Engineering apprentice Josiah Barlow, awarded the 2025 Bill Buckley Engineering Scholarship at the annual Maintenance Engineering Society of New Zealand (MESNZ) Awards dinner. Presented by Chris Penk MP and Bill Buckley, it’s designed to encourage New Zealand training into tertiary education and technology.

Hosted by us through his Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship at We Can and overseen by ATNZ, they also acknowledge that “Josiah embodies the ideal of the new generation of engineers - skilled, committed, curious, and deeply passionate about precision. His commitment to quality and his desire to understand the underlying reasons for his tasks set him apart.”

To receive this Scholarship is an honour for both Josiah, and the team that take pleasure in guiding him through his training. But it’s also well-deserved recognition for his journey so far, his personal motivation to be the best and to truly understand every aspect of every job he works on each day.

Though not complicated parts for us, these are machined in titanium, an expensive material with high hardness and temperature characteristics that make it challenging to machine. We Can has over 50 years of experience in machining difficult materials like this for our customers.

CLEVER MACHINING ON OUR MULTUS

Our larger Okuma Multus was used to produce this part for one of our regular customers this week. A complex part to machine down from a 360mm diameter solid piece of aluminium to a finished part with just a 3mm wall thickness, while managing to retain the bulk of the centre material for future use. Our operator was very proud of how he managed to programme this and how it turned out, especially at such a narrow final thickness.

GOOD AS NEW

We Can offers a cost-effective refurbishment of lobe pumps for many of our customers, including Fonterra. These reconditioned pumps can cost less than half what it would to replace with a new pump.

We machine the original housing, restoring it to a near-new state. It then takes 30 hours in our wirecut machine to create the new lobes to achieve clearances similar to the original manufacture, and on request, we can provide new or refurbished shafts, gears, seals or bearings. We also hold a range of common parts for pumps, when critical spares are required
