Forty four years of building towbars, and they still turn up to training!
Best Bars have been making towbars in Auckland since 1982, and fitting Blue Ox gear for a good few years now. We spent a morning at their Wiri workshop with Arnold, Lee and the team, running through the newer products and the dog clutch install. A dog clutch lets an automatic Jimny tow behind a motorhome.

Good people to have on your side.
If you are up that way, call in and have a chat before you settle on your gear. They'll look after you. Best Bars

Taranaki, your Blue Ox gear now has a local home.

AutoCity in New Plymouth is our Taranaki distributor, and they carry the full Blue Ox range. The baseplates, tow bars and dog clutch setups that let you tow a car behind the motorhome are on the ground close to home now, fitted by a team who handle this work as a matter of course.

Call in and talk it through with Daryn Pennington and the crew, or ring us at Blue Ox direct. Welcome aboard, AutoCity. Good to have Taranaki covered.

A-frame towing in New Zealand takes a bit of sorting out. The rules are in one place, the gear in another, and the forums don't always agree.

So we put it in one guide. What the law actually asks of you, the three parts of a legal setup, whether your car can be towed on an A-frame, and the mistakes worth avoiding.

It's free, and it's written for Kiwi motorhomes.
Have a read before you choose your gear.

A-Frame maintenance today.
Before and after pics of the pivot joint bushing replacement (2 inch receiver model)
Also replaced all the fibre washers, and replaced the boots due to one being split.
Heading back to its owner tomorrow ready for another 15,000km :-)

Most motorhome towbars are rated to stop just 1,000kg unbraked. A Jimny weighs more than that before you pack it.
The Patriot 3 brakes the car in step with the motorhome, so the combination pulls up inside the legal seven metres.

UNSURE IF YOU'RE LEGAL? Share your motorhome and toad details and we'll let you know.

The baseplate is the bracket that bolts to the front of your towed car, it's what the A-frame connects to.

On the Suzuki Jimny, Blue Ox baseplates mount through the grille opening and bolt to the chassis rails behind. Your bumper stays completely untouched. From the front, you'd barely know it's there.

Three connection heights are available depending on your setup:
- Under-splitter (330mm from ground), most common,
- Low connection (430mm), discreet, mounts near the number plate,
- Through-grille (580mm), best ground clearance for off-road Jimnies

Your installer will match the baseplate height to your motorhome's towbar height so the A-frame sits as level as possible. If there's a height mismatch, an adjustable drop receiver sorts it out.

All Blue Ox baseplates are ADR tested and certified to 3.5 tonnes.

One of the most common questions we get: "Do I need someone to help me connect?"

No. The whole Blue Ox system is designed for one person to connect and disconnect without a helper.

The 2-inch receiver A-frames (Alpha and Avail) fold up and stow on the motorhome, so you're not wrestling a heavy bar out of a storage locker. The Avail's non-binding latches release cleanly even when the rig is parked on uneven ground or on a slope, no jamming, no fighting with pins.

Line it up. Latch on. Plug in the electrics. Done.

You're travelling to be independent. Your towing setup should be too.

Weather is cooling down, change of season can often trigger thoughts of seasonal maintenance. If you have a Blue Ox A-frame, we recommend changing the fibre washers every 10,000 miles or 16,000km's.
It is a DIY job, we have the washer kits in stock or we can do the job for you.
