Haere rā Georgia Steel.
Eight years at MWDesign, which in design years is roughly equivalent to several geological epochs, or at the very least, the lifespan of a moderately successful houseplant.

She arrived, quietly competent, and then, rather inconveniently for everyone else, remained so. My right-hand woman, which sounds medieval, but feels accurate. If there was a problem, Georgis had already solved it, documented it, and improved it with a colour-coded system that made the rest of us look like we were assembling flat-pack furniture with oven mitts on.

I’ve referred to her as my “piri wepu” a term I may or may not have invented, but the meaning is clear: she’s got this. Always did. Whether it was navigating the gentle chaos of product development, shepherding ideas from sketch to reality, or dragging the company forward through those “character-building” periods we like to rebrand as growth.

And there were achievements. Many. Awards, accolades, moments of quiet triumph. Too many to list without risking this becoming an acceptance speech, which I suspect she’d handle better anyway.
Now, she departs for maternity leave, closing this particular eight-year chapter. A perfectly reasonable excuse, though mildly inconvenient for the rest of us, who must now attempt to function without our internal operating system.

We are, of course, immensely proud. Of everything she’s done, everything she’s built, and everything she’s about to do next. We wish her and her young family all the very best.

Georgia, you’ve been extraordinary. And, somewhat annoyingly, irreplaceable.

Commercial fishing, when done well, is one of the great proofs that humans can take from nature and think about the future at the same time.

But the sea isn’t just full of fish; it’s full of seabirds turning up to the buffet uninvited, and they pay the price when we get lazy with our gear and our habits.

The encouraging part is we already know how to fix a lot of this: smarter hooks, better line weighting, small changes in timing and technique that keep birds in the sky and still put fish in the hold.

If we design for seabirds on purpose, not as an afterthought, we don’t just protect wildlife, we prove that “sustainable fishing” is a practical behaviour, not a pious slogan

They say you can’t polish a turd, but in the modern world, you can roll it in glitter, give it a logo, a launch party and a slide deck, and call it “transformational”.
Underneath all the sparkle, though, it’s still the same old nonsense, just dressed for Instagram.

Talking to people who’ve seen it all before is great. They know which rules are arbitrary, and which ones, like oxygen, you ignore at your peril.

So before you reinvent everything… ask someone who understands it.

Or better yet, phone us. 07 8395018

Most difficult design problems aren’t actually technical; they’re perceptual.

People assume they need more engineering, more features, more complexity… when often the real breakthrough comes from reframing the problem entirely.

At MWDesign, we don’t just solve what’s in front of us, we question why it exists in that form in the first place. That’s usually where the unfair advantage lies.

If your problem feels stubborn, expensive, or oddly unsolvable, it’s probably not because it’s too hard.

It’s because it’s being looked at in the wrong way.
