“Don’t tell me you can put a piece of pipe in the ground, pump water out, and keep the other side dry. That can’t be right.”

That was Downer Project Manager Olof Smith’s reaction when wellpointing was suggested for a recent subdivision project in Gisborne.

High groundwater was creating unstable ground conditions and making excavation and pipe installation difficult. Prime installed a series of wellpoints around the excavation, connected to a vacuum-assisted dewatering pump, to lower the groundwater below excavation depth and create a dry, stable work area.

As construction progressed, the setup was adapted around the changing work area to maintain groundwater control and keep the job moving.

“But seeing it work on this subdivision project completely changed my mind. It’s made life so much easier, and I wouldn’t hesitate to use it again on future projects.”

With the water table under control, the Downer team could focus on the excavation and pipe installation rather than the groundwater working against them.

No power. Very little room to work with. And a temporary pump station that needed to respond automatically when wet weather put pressure on the network.

On a recent wastewater project, an undersized section of pipeline increased the risk of overflows during high rainfall while permanent upgrades were underway.

Prime designed a customised BA100K diesel pumping system around the site constraints, with a suction setup engineered for the confined chamber and radar level controls, telemetry and monitoring connected to the client’s existing SCADA network.

As requirements changed, Prime adapted the system to maintain the automatic response needed during high rainfall.

Nothing slows a project down like an excavation that won't stay open.

When groundwater and running sands cause the ground to collapse, every bucket can mean more delays, rework and additional costs.

That was the challenge one of our clients faced while constructing a cattle underpass as part of a new rotary milking system. Around three metres into the excavation, groundwater made it impossible to safely reach the required depth.

After assessing the site conditions, Prime installed a perimeter wellpoint dewatering system connected to a BA150 dewatering pump. By lowering the groundwater table, the running sands stabilised and the excavation became safe and workable again.

What do you do when you have groundwater but nowhere, you're not consented to discharge it?

Most dewatering projects are relatively straightforward: pump the groundwater out, discharge it safely, and get on with the job. This project wasn't one of those projects.

With the site's consent conditions ruling out any groundwater discharge to the stormwater or wastewater network, a recent project in Tauranga presented a unique challenge. A contractor needed to connect into an existing wastewater line below the water table without the option of conventional dewatering.

Prime designed and delivered a dewatering and rewatering solution using 4m self-jetters and a PT150 dewatering pump. Groundwater was transferred 150 metres to a rewatering system, where it was reinjected into the water table rather than discharged. The result was a dry work area, allowing the connection to be completed while meeting the site's consent requirements.

For more than 70 years, Road Metals has supplied the aggregates and construction materials behind New Zealand's roads, major infrastructure and civil projects. It's the kind of work that's often out of sight, but without businesses like Road Metals, many of the projects we rely on every day simply wouldn't happen.

The conversations we had at QuarryNZ were one of the highlights of the event. Busy is an understatement for our Hawke's Bay team this year.

Josh Raikes has barely had a chance to stay in the branch since joining the Hire Operations team in March, spending most of his time out on site. And somehow, Project Manager Mark Cadwallader still managed to fit in training for the Sky Tower Firefighter Challenge along the way.

Most contractors know how to deal with muddy water. Dissolved heavy metals are a different challenge.

At a Northland boat yard, a 60,000L storage pond was holding up civil works. The obvious answer was to pump it out.

The problem? Testing found elevated zinc levels and dissolved heavy metals, meaning conventional sediment controls wouldn't achieve the required discharge standard.

Prime configured a portable pressure vessel treatment system to treat the water on-site before it entered the stormwater network.

The interesting part is that the water didn't look particularly unusual. The challenge was what was dissolved in it.

It's a good reminder that water treatment problems aren't always visible.

Workshop Wednesday 🔧

Some rebuilds start in the workshop. This one started underwater.

After being recovered from an on-site incident, this BBA BA150E arrived at our Greymouth workshop with extensive water damage affecting the pump, engine, and electrical systems.

As Glenn Williams, Head of Workshop, explains:
"When this pump arrived at our workshop after being completely submerged, we knew it wouldn't be a straightforward repair. Following a thorough inspection, the team completed a full wet-end rebuild, fitted a new motor, reassembled the unit, and carried out comprehensive testing before returning it to service."

From a submerged pump to a fully operational unit, this was a great result from the Greymouth workshop team.

Now back in service and ready for its next job.
