Before you build your app… validate it.

We recently developed an app mock-up for KoFetch, allowing the concept to be tested, reviewed and refined before committing to full software development.

Rather than jumping straight into code, we focused on:
• User flow and real-world behaviour
• Screen logic and interface clarity
• Commercial validation with stakeholders

The result? Clear direction, reduced risk, and smarter investment into the development stage.

Nothing like finishing off the year with a two-week visit to China. Great to spend time in our Shenzhen office, and time on the ground with key clients in Shunde, suppliers in Dongguan, and then heading north to our client’s factory in Yangzhou near Shanghai to review new tooling, production processes, QC checks and next-stage product development.
Back into New Zealand in time for a couple of days in the studio before closing out the year on the 24th... what a rush!

What happens when a concept is developed with manufacturing in mind?
It can move far closer to production than most expect.
When design intent, engineering logic, and manufacturability align early, a concept can transition to tooling with only minor refinement.
That’s exactly what happened on the AED cabinet project with Mouldings Unlimited and Wellington Free Ambulance – a concept built for harsh coastal conditions and taken almost directly into production.
Early alignment makes all the difference.

From clay to CAD.
Every great product starts with form – and for the OBO Carbon Helmet, that began with hand-sculpted clay models to explore proportion, ergonomics, and visual character.
Once the design intent was defined, we moved into CAD, applying material requirements, FEA, and DFM detail to validate the structure with prototype shells – tested for fit, comfort, and on-field vision with players.
It’s this mix of hands-on design and digital engineering that turns concept into confident, high-performing form.

Silver at the 2025 Best Design Awards 🥈
We’re proud to see our collaboration with OBO recognised for outstanding product design.
The OBO Carbon Goalkeeper Helmet shows what’s possible when design and manufacture are aligned from the very start.

Through our design-to-manufacture process, IDEA developed a helmet that balances comfort, protection, and brand identity — created with OBO to reflect their distinctive visual language and meet the demands of elite athletes.
Every detail was informed by insights from top-level play — ensuring comfort, balance, and protection. Built from advanced materials and validated through FEA simulations and impact testing, the helmet achieved CE certification and sets a new benchmark for field hockey safety.

Fun fact: field hockey balls can reach 140 km/h — yes, a cannon was used for testing (and yes, the footage is awesome).

This project highlights how early design insight and close client collaboration can turn complex challenges into high-performing, award-winning products.

Super excited to be a finalist in the Best Design Awards this year!
We've been working closely with OBO for over 10 years developing their Field Hockey Goalie helmets, from concept design and prototype testing to manufacturing.
This OBO Carbon helmet range meets the unique needs of field hockey keepers at all levels of play right up to Olympic, with a product that is uniquely theirs, visually and technically delivering on their promise of “GOOD S**T THAT REALLY WORKS”.

Well done to everyone involved and looking forward to awards night.
