The frame stayed. The door and the sidelight are new.

On this Auckland renovation the clients wanted to keep their existing entry frame, so they had us manufacture a new door and sidelight to go into it, made to retain the character of the home.

Both are Western Red Cedar, painted in dark tones. This entry is well under cover and away from damaging sunlight, which is what makes the darker colour the right call here.

Made to the client's own spec, right down to the stainless.

This Rosewood entry frame was custom made for a refurbished home in Howick. The scoured stainless plate was chosen to pair with their handles, and together they make a real feature of the entry as you come up the driveway.

The wide leaf is a free swinging pivot door with a smaller fixed panel alongside it. A pivot is the right call for a heavier door. Hang that much weight on hinges and they stretch over time, and once they do you are chasing the alignment for the rest of the door's life.

Too big for hinges?

This is the boys preparing a large Western Red Cedar plank door, ready to go into a Rosewood frame. At this scale hinges would give up eventually, so it runs on a FritsJurgens self closing pivot mechanism instead.

These systems are smooth and reliable, and they give years of trouble free use, which is the part that counts on a door someone opens every day for the next thirty years.

It is also the sort of job that only works when it is all made in one place. Drawn, machined and fitted here on Carpenter Road in East Tāmaki, by people who have been doing it for years.

Reeded glass does something a solid door cannot.

This is a matching set in Hemlock, finished in a natural clear varnish, with narrow reeded glass in both. The larger one is a cavity slider that runs back into the wall, the smaller is hinged.

The glass is what makes it work. Light comes through, shapes do not, so a space with no window of its own still gets light and nobody gives up any privacy. Making the two as a set means they read as one decision rather than two.

A full house of white timber joinery, made for a new build on Great Barrier Island.

It is a home away from home for a client who is a long time builder himself. He took real care over the design, working a coastal theme through it and landing on a traditional look with a character of its own.

The windows are double glazed with stick on timber bars, which gives you the traditional colonial style without giving up the performance. Everything is finished in a full oil-based paint system. In a harsher environment like the Barrier, that is what makes the difference to how much maintenance the joinery asks for later on.

Rosewood, with a stainless steel plate set into the design.

It was supplied for a commercial fit out at a head office in East Tāmaki, which makes them near enough neighbours of ours. That steel plate is not just a flourish. It sheds a little light on the company's business type, and we will leave that one with you.

It is laminated safety glass throughout for added security, with a durable natural finish that lets the hardwood do the talking.

This grey is not a stain. It goes all the way through the timber.

These bifolds are Accoya Color Grey, where the colour is taken to the core during the treatment process rather than applied afterwards. The timber arrives with us rough sawn and we machine the joinery from there. Because the colour runs right through the section, dressing it down to size does not change it, and neither does a cut end.

That counts most where timber usually struggles. This unit is in Beachlands, close to the water on a landscaped site with stone walls and stone cladding. The hinges and bifold gear are PVD black, chosen for the same reason as the timber. Coastal air is hard on everything.

Low maintenance, and built to stay that way.
