Big shout out to Ollie for completing his apprenticeship and becoming a qualified tradesman. He ploughed through his coursework faster than anyone I’ve known, all while absorbing his on the job learning and crafting his trade.

Ollie was another gateway student from Otago Boys Highschool who showed great promise. Quickly picking up new skills, listening well to instruction, and always up for a new challenge.

He’s honed his skills not only in the workshop, but on the sales team as well. Attending field days across the country the assist Wayne & Steve at the Perkinz site. With his own farming knowledge and crutching experience, he’s been a great fit and a real asset to the team.

It’s an absolute pleasure to have you on board. Thanks for all the hard work you've put in Ollie, you’re a top example of a young tradesman and it’s been great to see you grow along this journey. Congratulations on this achievement.

Safety briefing finished early on flight so popped up and rolled out a quick Perkinz promotion. Yes I know we're not as big a company as AirNZ but I'm pretty sure we're losing less money. Thanks AirNZ for being good sports.

Congratulations to Henry for completing his apprenticeship and becoming a qualified tradesman. His drive and diligence saw him completing all his required units well ahead of schedule.

Henry came to us through the gateway program from Otago Boys Highschool. His back ground in farming and eagerness to learn new skills saw him quickly fit in with the team and lead to us asking him to stay on at the end of his schooling.

Watching him grow from a school boy, to the tradesman he is today, has been a pleasure. Thanks for all the hard work you've put in Henry, both in the jobs you work on and in constantly improving in your own skill sets. And thanks for cooking your own celebratory BBQ for us all, just one of your many talents.

Wayne Perkins is on his way over to Australia to setup and run the tally counter and live streaming for Nikki's upcoming shearing record

“Life is like a box of chocolates” was the famous line from Forrest Gump. “You’re never sure what you’re going to get!”

Nikki Lyons, who is gearing up to set the 9-Hour Merino Lamb Shearing World Record on 15th October, might have a better understanding than most of the brutal reality of Forrest’s most often repeated statement.

Last year, when Nikki set the 8-Hour Merino Lamb Record of 395, she battled away all day on lambs that just wouldn’t let her shear to her potential. It is a testament to Nikki — her strength, stamina and mental toughness — that she not only performed incredibly well on sub-par lambs, but held her head high afterwards and acted with great dignity amongst what we could all see was significant personal disappointment.

Talking to Nikki in the days after her record, I remember thinking, “This won’t be the last we hear of this woman,” and so it came as no surprise when she rang me to talk about plans to have another go — this time at the 9-hour record.

There are many things that have impressed me as we (Perkinz) have been lucky and privileged to be a small part of the incredibly exciting story that these amazing women shearers are writing into the history books.

Their dedication, technique, composure under pressure and strength are obvious — they’re there for all the world to see — but perhaps the thing I’ve found most impressive is their bloody-minded stubbornness that goes by just one name in the shearing industry, and that is “guts.”

These women have got guts — they’ve got it in spades — and you get the feeling that if someone locked their catching pen door by mistake, they’d rip the bloody thing off its hinges.

And that guts will be on display once again this coming Wednesday as Nikki laces up the moccasins for her second world record attempt. I’m sure that some of Nikki’s motivation will be to show the world what she can do on half-decent lambs.

I think we might be about to see something special from Nikki as she looks to etch her name in history for the second time, and join names like Sacha Bond and Megan Whitehead as a double world record holder.

Go Nikki. Give ’em hell!
