What do you do when you need more space at home but you are concerned about rising housing interest rates, inflation & costs going up? What you might have done in a more buoyant economy would be up sell & upsize or build an extension. Maybe now that's not an option. Have you thought about a sleepout or cabin? Great news for anyone thinking about adding a sleepout, shed, or small studio to their property!
Recent changes to building rules mean it’s now easier and faster for homeowners to put up small structures without the usual red tape.
What’s changed?
🏡 No setback required for single-storey buildings under 10m² — you can now build them right up to the boundary without needing consent.
📏 For buildings between 10m² and 30m², the required setback has been reduced to just 1 metre.
🛠 Many small structures up to 30m² can still be built without a building consent, as long as they meet standard Building Code requirements.
These updates make it simpler and more affordable to add practical spaces like sleepouts, home offices, hobby rooms, or extra storage — perfect for growing families, side hustles, or smart property upgrades.
