SAFETY TIP // Water obstacles come in many types and sizes, from puddles with attitude to fast-flowing mountain rivers. With all of them, make sure you know what you are getting into before you get into it. Check the depth of the water and the nature of what lies beneath. Pools may have a soft, muddy bottom; with rivers and streams, rocks or holes are likely to be more of a problem.

Labour Weekend marks the start of the summer 4WD season in the South Island with the opening of access to several primo DOC areas. Which is why the truck's all set and so are we! Latest on https://www.doc.govt.nz/? No alerts for Te Papanui (Lammerlaw/Lammermoor) or Kopuwai (Old Woman/Old Man Range) conservation areas but this below for Oteake. Sounds like Proceed With Caution is the plan and keep an eye on the DOC site for alerts - Mark

Expect slips and track and road damage in the area due to the large amount of rain on 3 and 4 October 2024. Once tracks and campsites in this area have been assessed we will provide more information on the website. Last reviewed on 21 October 2024.
