We have had a busy morning in Christchurch where our 1st module lift was completed on site at Library chambers which is a major milestone for the team. There has been months of planning go into this delivery on site and well done to all involved in this journey. Here is a few photos of the lifts on site by our team with assistance from Smith Crane & Construction Ltd and Farrell Construction this morning. A big thank you to the MEP contractors involved with the prefabrication of the modules from the Beca design in our Christchurch workshop MELRAY ELECTRIC LIMITED and plumbing. A massive shout out for our client Aaron Boddington for trusting in this process πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ˜

We are right behind this campaign from Andrei Moore - Councillor for Halswell and Canterbury Rugby League for a fair go when it comes to selling the old Rugby league park here in Christchurch πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸ‘ŠπŸ‘ŠπŸ™πŸ™

A decision will soon come to Council on the future of the land at Apollo Projects Stadium aka Rugby League Park aka Addington Showgrounds.

We first need to recognise the historical significance of this facility along with the unjust position that Canterbury Rugby League have ended up in as a result.

Following the earthquakes, CRL did the right thing by our city ending their lease 30 years early and departing their long-term home in Addington so a temporary stadium could be built. Many take it for granted but It's incredible how well scaffolding has served us. From All Blacks matches to multiple Foo Fighters concerts, it's punched above its weight and both CRL + Venues Ōtautahi should be commended for helping make these 13 years that much more enjoyable.

What hasn’t been spoken about is the ongoing losses that Canterbury Rugby League have suffered as a result. Their new home at Ngā Puna Wai is great but they have been left to survive without critical revenue streams they had in Addington such as the kitchen & bar, being able to rent out the stadium (remember the monster trucks?) and they no longer have a gym for their players. It also now costs them a lot more to put events on. The financial impact of this move is staggering and I was shocked to learn the extent of them.

As we consider the future of this land we need to question if it’s ok to allow the outcome to leave CRL worse off while they did their bit to make our city better off.

As I understand it, giving them back an empty patch of land won't be helpful. They would, however, benefit from upgrading their existing facilities so they’re not left worse off indefinitely.

If Council sells this land, I believe we must consider ringfencing a portion of the proceeds to help establish a new trust, much like what happened in Auckland with Carlaw Park and the Carlaw Heritage Trust. This could help secure their future for generations to come and potentially even play a pivotal role in helping bring an NRL team here.

This sport has always paid their way yet aren’t flush with cash. It helps brings hope and purpose to young people. I've had heartbreaking conversations with coaches who know kids eager to play but whose parents can't afford the boots and registration fees. If we have left CRL worse off financially then we have ultimately played a part in limiting access to recreation in our city.

Furthermore, legends of the game have had their ashes spread on these grounds. Cultural & spiritual respect must be shown at every step of this process, whatever the outcome.

I hope to see consideration given to these thoughts as this process progresses.
