A message from Bruce Davey, our CEO.
Over the last couple of weeks we have been fondly remembering Professor Rick Beatson, the brilliant mind behind the FastRBF™ engine that powers ARANZ Medical Silhouette and Leapfrog software (by Seequent, a Bentley Systems company). He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
Using mathematical Radial Basis Functions to model 3D data, Rick developed FastRBF, a highly efficient implementation that made it possible to process very large datasets on a standard desktop computer. This technology enables interpolation of data values to generate equipotential isosurfaces or to resample data onto regular grids. Even today, the numerical methods Rick created in the late 1990s remain unmatched in speed.
Rick’s FastRBF inventions led to reshaping 3D modelling techniques in the medical devices and exploration industries – with applications in laser scanning, rapid prototyping, medical imaging, computer graphics, scientific visualization, geological modelling, and geophysics.
FastRBF technology enabled tens of thousands of people with amputations to have comfortable, custom-fit prosthetics, significantly improving their quality of life.
Rick’s work was pure mathematics, yet it remains one of the strongest examples of how profound, foundational research can evolve into impactful applied science, reshaping an industry, guiding countless careers, and generating hundreds of jobs in New Zealand and overseas.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Rick’s wife, Meg, as well as to his family, friends, and colleagues who are mourning this loss.
