Part 1.
My collection of photos that never make it to the instagram feed is massive so thought Iโd post what sometimes gets left by the way side but is a really cool insight into the fabrication process behind a lot of my work.
I built the shop Ranger tray in August before the 2024 4x4 Outdoor Expo in the lead up to showcasing it on the stand at the event. The tray was completely custom built and 95% of it hand made with very little CAD design, cnc or laser cut components to the build, it just came straight out of my head and put on to sheetmetal and built on the fly by my own hands. In my opinion this type of fabrication is becoming a lost art due to CAD, cnc machines etc and as cool as CAD design is I think there is something to be said about handcrafted fabrication and I have a real admiration for this type of work.
This is part 1 of a series of posts Iโll throw up in relation to the custom built tray I did for the Ranger.
At this early stage of the build I knew I wanted to use our XTR Tray platform and just make changes to it, modifying and adding design features to it 1. Set it apart from the norm in a world full of tray builds on trucks and 2. Get some ideas that had be brewing in my mind but never had the opportunity to implement up until this point. A custom rear exit exhaust with a Lamborghini/Exotic sports car style of tip fell into the design style of the rear end of the XTR tray. In this post the photos document the mock up of the flat deck, the extra height I had to add to the tray mount setup to accomodate the over the x-member high mount rear exit exhaust and the space it needed to be routed that way. I wanted the exhaust to mount as high as I could without losing drawer space recessing it into drawer fascia without taking away or changing the look of the XTR rear end. The last few pics show the way the rear drawer fascia had to be notched to achieve that look.
The rear exit exhaust in this fashion was something that I hadnโt seen in a tray design yet and was something that had been on my mind for a while and was good to get out of my mind and incorporated into a tray build.
