We recently attended the local Passive House meeting at a beautiful new build in Christchurch, where Koffman European windows were installed throughout the home.

It came up during the discussions that even our standard window system met the performance requirements for this Passive House project.

That's something we're proud of.

It’s easy to compare windows based on material alone.
uPVC vs aluminium is often framed as a design decision. But performance depends on more than appearance.

One of the key factors is thermal conductivity.

Aluminium is highly conductive.
Without an effective thermal break, it transfers heat and cold readily.

uPVC is naturally insulating, reducing heat transfer through the frame.

That said, both high-quality uPVC and thermally broken aluminium systems can achieve similar U-values when engineered well.

So the better question is:

Window performance doesn't come from the product alone.
It comes from how it’s installed.

For a window to work as intended, it needs to sit within the thermal line of the wall, not just fixed into the opening. The frame and the insulation layer should align and connect.

When installation is treated as a basic trade step, problems show up quickly:
• Thermal bridging around the frame
• Air leakage through unsealed gaps
• Condensation forming where it shouldn't

In simple terms: If the installation isn't right, the window can’t do its job.

Some homes you walk into… and immediately feel the difference.

This Fendalton project is one of them.
Designed with performance in mind from the very beginning, the home features triple-glazed, triple-sealed window systems with argon-filled units and Low-E coatings on both sides, a combination built to retain heat, reduce energy loss, and create a consistently comfortable indoor environment year-round.

Your builder gave you a window spec. Here are the 5 questions most people forget to ask.

When you're comparing window quotes in New Zealand, the price on the page rarely tells the full story. Here's what to dig into before you sign off:

1. Is the glass Low-E coated on both panes?
One coating is standard. Two can be the difference between overheating in summer.

2. What's the spacer width between the panes?
18mm warm-edge spacers outperform the 12–14mm used in most standard NZ windows.

3. Is triple glazing actually triple glazing?
Some quotes use the term loosely. Ask for the U-value, genuine high-performance triple glazing should reach R2.0 or better.

4. Will the windows be recessed into the thermal envelope?
If not, the thermal barrier between wall and frame is broken, and the R-value you're paying for won't translate to your lived experience.

5. What gas fill is between the panes?
Argon gas is the standard for performance glazing. Air fill is not.

At Koffman, all five are standard, not upgrades.
