New marine rules so far for 2026 make sure you check them out as they could affect you

⚓ New maritime rules taking effect in 2026

These updates give operators and seafarers clearer, more consistent expectations by moving long standing exemption requirements into the Maritime Rules.

Maritime Rules Amendments 2025 (No 3) have now been signed. The changes replace nine expired general exemptions and make their requirements permanent.

The updates formalise practices already used in the sector, clarify safety and technical expectations, remove outdated radio requirements, and streamline parts of the certification and training pathway.

The updates take effect in two stages:

⚓ from 28 January 2026 – escape arrangements, rescue boat launching, firefighting equipment, anchor chain testing and MF/HF radio

⚓ from 31 March 2026 – sea service options, certification pathways and training requirements for several ratings

📝 Have your say on proposed maritime rule changes

Maritime NZ and the Ministry of Transport are consulting on updates to maritime rules that would replace expired exemptions with clear requirements. Your feedback matters.

🔧 What’s being proposed?

The proposals cover two main areas:

🔹 Seafarer Certification and Training (30 Series Rules)

These proposals address technical issues in the certification framework, including training pathways, and sea service requirements. They aim to make the framework more flexible and cost-efficient while maintaining safety and compliance with international conventions. ✅

🔹 Vessel Design, Construction and Equipment (40 Series Rules)

These proposals address practical issues affecting domestic commercial vessels, including escape arrangements from vessel accommodation spaces, rescue boat launching, fire safety equipment, and testing and marking for anchor chain cables and accessories. The changes aim to clarify requirements, reduce unnecessary costs, and improve safety outcomes.✅

Was great last week to assist South Port NZ marine team with a familiarization exercise for lifejackets and inflation of a liferaft.
Staff got to inflate and feel how their lifejackets worked, and learning aspects of a liferaft in the water.
Thanks to all that attended.
