Rook operates on a simple principle: coffee as “experiential and experimental”. The chrome-plated Modbar system is the first thing you notice, a deliberate focal point in a space defined by cool grey tiles and exposed concrete.

The cafe occupies the ground floor of Christchurch's NZR Co Building on Hereford Street, a structure that stood as a post-earthquake reminder for years. Now it houses something different, a modern cafe that lets the coffee and conversation take centre stage.

The design is intentionally minimal. Clean lines, uncluttered surfaces, and an open layout that encourages exchange between barista and guest. No unnecessary elements, just the essentials done well.

Ozone Coffee Roasters NZ anchors the menu as Rook’s main coffee partner, alongside a regularly changing lineup of international roasters to keep things feeling fresh. You’ll find impeccably dialled-in classics, clean and balanced filter coffees, and a selection of specialty drinks including a cult-favourite cold foam menu that’s become a defining part of the experience.
