Looking for welding talent in South Auckland? ATNZ currently has nine motivated welding candidates ready to step into jobs.

South Auckland is home to some of New Zealand’s busiest engineering, fabrication and manufacturing businesses—and for many employers, finding motivated entry-level welding staff remains a real challenge.

ATNZ is currently working with a group of learners who are ready to take the next step into industry.

They’ve completed intensive pre-employment training, developed practical welding skills, and achieved NZQA welding unit standards.

They’re now ready to move into welding-related roles across South Auckland while continuing through the New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3).

For businesses, this is an opportunity to connect with local talent who already have practical training, are ready to contribute to the workshop, and are keen to keep building capability on the job.

ATNZ can also connect employers with MSD to discuss what support may be available.

If your South Auckland business is looking to strengthen welding capability with motivated local talent, we’d love to talk.

South Auckland engineering employers — ATNZ currently has a group of motivated future welders preparing to enter the workforce.

These learners are nearing completion of an intensive pre-employment training programme designed to give them a solid grounding in welding, practical workshop skills, and the expectations of working in industry.

Importantly, they’re not starting from scratch.

They have already started developing practical welding skills, completed NZQA welding unit standards, and are gearing up to advance to the New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3).

Just as importantly, they are enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to prove themselves in the workplace.

For employers, this is an opportunity to:
✔️ Bring in entry-level welding staff who have completed initial training
✔️ Develop people to suit your workshop, standards, and type of work
✔️ Build future workforce capability in a tight labour market
✔️ Reduce the challenge of finding motivated new staff
✔️ Receive ongoing support from ATNZ throughout the training journey
✔️ We can connect you with MSD to explore what support may be available

Today, the group visited IMG Integrated Maintenance Group in East Tamaki to gain exposure to a real engineering workshop environment and better understand the opportunities available within the industry.

A huge thank you to Adrian Brass and the IMG team for taking the time to host the learners and share their experience and insights.

The immediate goal is to place these learners into welding-related roles where they can continue progressing through the New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3). Long-term, there is also potential for apprenticeship pathways where opportunities exist.

The learners are now work-ready, and we are speaking with employers about placements and employment opportunities.

If your business could benefit from motivated future welders who are ready to get started, please send us a message or chat with your ATNZ Account Manager

Hydraulics and pneumatics power some of New Zealand’s most important industries — including manufacturing, agriculture, transport, construction, food processing, heavy engineering, and industrial automation.

Yet for years, there was limited formal training available in New Zealand specifically focused on fluid power engineering.

That’s why the New Zealand Certificate in Fluid Power Engineering Fundamentals (Level 3) matters.

Delivered by ATNZ, this NZQA-approved programme helps develop the practical skills and technical understanding needed to work confidently with hydraulic and pneumatic systems in real industry environments.

Learners build capability in:
✔️ Hydraulic and pneumatic fundamentals
✔️ Fluid power components and circuit interpretation
✔️ System assembly, testing, and servicing
✔️ Fault finding and troubleshooting
✔️ Safe maintenance and operational practices

The programme is workplace-based and designed to fit around employment, allowing learners to build recognised capability while continuing to contribute on the job.

This qualification helps businesses:
✔️ Strengthen maintenance and troubleshooting capability
✔️ Build specialist technical skills within existing teams
✔️ Improve workforce flexibility and resilience
✔️ Support succession planning in a highly specialised area
✔️ Create pathways into advanced engineering training and apprenticeships

As automation, machinery complexity, and productivity demands continue to increase across the industry, the need for people with fluid power capability is only growing.

Developing practical, industry-recognised skills in this space is an investment in the future capability of New Zealand engineering and manufacturing.

ATNZ is proud to deliver this specialist programme and support the industries that rely on fluid power every day.

From apprentice to business owner — Sam Greig is building an impressive future in engineering.

After leaving school in Year 11, Sam completed his engineering apprenticeship through ATNZ and qualified early last year. Not long after, he took over a local Waikato engineering business and launched Greig’s Engineering.

Now Sam is busy supporting the rural sector with everything from farm and cowshed maintenance to custom fabrication and 4WD builds — and he’s already giving back by training his own apprentice through ATNZ.

It’s an awesome example of where a trade can take you. With practical skills, determination and the right support, apprenticeships can open the door to incredible opportunities.

Well done Sam — we can’t wait to see where the next few years take you

Congratulations to Jake Harris, who has now completed his General Engineering apprenticeship with Quinn Engineering in Kerepehi.

Jake’s achievement reflects the value of long-term investment in workforce capability, developing practical skills, technical confidence, and real industry experience on the job.

It’s also a great example of the role regional engineering businesses play in building the future of New Zealand’s trades workforce.

Huge congratulations as well to Nigel, Matt, and the team at Quinn Engineering for their commitment to developing skilled people in the industry.

Well done, Jake: a fantastic achievement and an exciting milestone in your engineering career.
