Its an exciting milestone for Glide with the official opening of its new oil recycling and re-refining facility in Pukekohe! The innovative plant transforms used lubricating oils into high-quality base oil that can be re-refined repeatedly, supporting a more circular approach to managing this valuable resource.

For Babbage, this has been a truly multidisciplinary effort. What began with planning support for the existing facility grew into a much wider collaboration, demonstrating the value of combining our technical expertise with strong project leadership and trusted client relationships.

Sunday's official opening was an opportunity to see the completed facility in operation and recognise the collective effort that went into bringing this ambitious project to life.

A big acknowledgement to our Babbage project team which included Project Management, Planning, Design Management, Electrical, Site Modelling/Coordination, Project Finance, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Fire Engineering, Contaminated Land, and Site Management & Planning. A fantastic collective effort across so many disciplines!
Congratulations to Glide and everyone involved in delivering this innovative facility. It's a great example of what can be achieved when our specialists work together on a project with meaningful environmental benefits.

Maintaining relationships with suppliers is an important part of our work. Getting together gives us time to catch up with familiar faces, make new connections and draw on the practical knowledge of the people who supply the products we specify.

We recently welcomed supplier representatives to our Auckland office to explore new products on offer in the market and meet the people behind them.

With materials on display and plenty of opportunities to ask questions, our team could take a closer look at the products, discuss their applications and seek advice for projects currently on the go. These conversations help us understand what’s available and how different options could work for our clients.

It takes more than a bit of wild Coromandel weather to stop this hardy Babbage bunch!

Ten of our Social Club members took on the Pinnacles, battling low cloud, slippery tracks and seemingly endless stairs on the almost 600m climb to Pinnacles Hut.

After an evening of food, w**e and a fiercely competitive game of Uno, it was an early start to tackle the summit, this time with strong winds, cloud and rain thrown into the mix.

The trip back down included some frogging fun at a stream, an unexpected roadside rescue and a well-earned lunch in Thames.

Another great Babbage adventure done and dusted!

Last Wednesday, our Ecology Team, Bioresearches, headed along to the University of Auckland’s “Where My Degree Took Me” Careers Expo, chatting with students studying Biological Sciences, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geography and GIS about where a career in ecology and environmental science could take them.

Marine Ecologist Jessica Patino-Perez and Ecologist Alisha Hart were there representing the team, sharing a little about what they do, the projects they get to work on, and what a career with our Bioresearches team can look like.

Of course, we couldn’t talk about ecology without bringing along a few surprise guests! With special permission, we had preserved specimens on display for students to get up close with, plus wildflower seed bombs to take home and plant, because why not leave everyone with a small way to give nature a helping hand too? 💐

Great conversations, fresh thinking and plenty of ideas at the Water New Zealand Conference & Expo!

This year’s conference brought the water sector together to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of water in Aotearoa.
It was a great opportunity for our team to connect with industry peers, learn and contribute.

Mariana Basilio (Babbage’s Senior Environmental and Spatial Consultant) presented research co-authored with Judith van Dijk (Babbage’s Senior Environmental Scientist and Soil Specialist), exploring how catchment restoration can change hydrological behaviour and strengthen climate resilience.

Their research combines detailed soil investigation with stormwater modelling, highlighting how regenerated forest soils can help reduce peak flows.

A fantastic few days of sharing knowledge, learning and connecting with others working towards better water outcomes.

Celebrating Innovation Excellence

Building Nations 2026 was a fantastic two days of great conversations, new connections and fresh thinking, capped off by the Gala Dinner and Impact Awards.

As sponsor of the Excellence in Innovation Award, Babbage’s Khareedi Suman Kumar (Principal – Infrastructure) took to the stage to reflect on our own history of innovation and how, across 90 years in the industry, we have continued to evolve, adapt and find smarter ways to deliver better outcomes.

We were incredibly proud to present TSA Riley with the Excellence in Innovation Award for their outstanding Hangar 4 and Workshops project. Congratulations to the team on a well-deserved win!

It was a great couple of days connecting with people from across the industry and sharing ideas about what’s next for infrastructure in Aotearoa with plenty of inspiration to take back with us.

The Domain Collection on Carlton Gore Road is now complete, and we’re pleased to have supported Precinct Properties with civil engineering services for the development.

Our Civil team worked alongside GN Construction and the wider project team through the delivery of the project, providing practical civil engineering input to help respond to site requirements and support construction.

Projects like this are a collaborative effort, and it has been great to work alongside the client, contractor and consultant team to help bring the development through to completion.

There’s nothing quite like stepping inside a project you’ve spent so much time seeing on screen and on paper.

Babbage Architecture recently headed out to Chelsea Rise in Birkenhead for a site visit, giving the team the opportunity to explore the development as it takes shape and see the drawings come to life at full scale.

It was an educational and inspiring experience – from seeing how design decisions and detailing translate into the built environment, to experiencing the scale, spaces and spectacular outlook that you simply can’t get from a drawing.

Chelsea Rise delivers 77 apartments across eight storeys, making the most of its elevated site and panoramic views across the Waitematā Harbour and Auckland skyline.

A great day out for the team, and a rewarding reminder of why getting on site is such an important part of what we do.

How can councils balance technical feasibility, environmental outcomes, cultural values and affordability when planning future wastewater solutions?

Louisa will share a case study from Whakatāne District Council, exploring the feasibility of land irrigation as a future wastewater discharge options.

The assessment was guided by the initial Taumata Arowai wastewater environmental performance standards, alongside expert understanding of wastewater systems and local environmental conditions. Through a co-design process involving Council, technical specialists and iwi/hapū partners, these considerations were brought together to support informed decision-making.

The presentation will explore the key constraints identified and why hybrid land and water discharge approaches emerged as potentially more practical and resilient long-term options.
