Babbage will be proudly represented at next week’s Water New Zealand’s Stormwater Conference & Expo 2026 at the NZICC, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and we’re looking forward to connecting with industry peers, partners, and attendees throughout the event.

Our Infrastructure Lead, Suman Khareedi, will be presenting a paper on the Revitalisation of Hakanoa Stream at 3.30 pm on Wednesday, sharing how the site was transformed from derelict to delightful through a nature-based design approach. It’s a great example of how integrated stormwater, environmental, and community outcomes can come together to create lasting value.

You’ll also find the Babbage team in the exhibition hall at Stand 66.

Come by to meet members of our Infrastructure, Environmental Science & Engineering, and Civil Engineering teams.

Ask questions, and learn more about the work we’re doing across New Zealand.

We’ll also be running games and competitions throughout the conference, with prizes up for grabs.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Babbage’s Hiram Garcia had the awesome opportunity to sit down with Alga’s Rebecca Thomas on their e-cronicle podcast this past March.
From contaminated land projects to a global film set, Hiram shares his journey through major projects in Aotearoa New Zealand and the very unusual moment his career crossed paths with A Minecraft Movie.
It’s a candid conversation about curiosity, adaptability, and how developing your own skills can lead to opportunities far beyond initial expectations. A reminder that careers don’t always follow straight lines, and sometimes, that’s where the most interesting stories emerge.

We’re excited to share that Stijn Van den Eeden, Babbage’s Associate Principal External Envelope, has been appointed as the New Zealand Chair of the Society of Façade Engineers (SFE).

Stijn says, “A big thank you to Jon Robinson for his work in establishing the SFE, and to Susanne Hundert for stepping into the Vice Chair role alongside myself – an awesome team to help grow the organisation locally.”

The SFE was established in 2004 through a collaboration between CIBSE, IStructE and RIBA, and brings professionals together to share knowledge, advance practice, and promote high-performing building façades. As buildings become more complex, the importance of façades continues to grow, playing a key role in areas such as thermal performance, ventilation, daylighting, solar control and acoustics.

It’s an exciting time for the discipline, and we’re looking forward to seeing the SFE thrive here in Aotearoa.

If you’re interested in being part of this growing community and contributing to the future of façade engineering in New Zealand, Stijn would love to hear from you.

City to Surf 2026 – Christchurch 🏃‍♀️

A fantastic turnout this year at City to Surf 2026, where 200+ people from engineering companies across Christchurch took part in a friendly competition organised by Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau.

We’re proud to say Babbage’s Gavin Sandrey took out the 12 km run in the Engineering NZ bracket with an impressive 43:59 finish time 👏

Babbage was also happy to help Engineering New Zealand with organising prizes and preparing food for the finish-line gathering.

The event itself supports several local charities through the City to Surf programme, making the day about more than just running.

And to top it all off, the weather couldn’t have been better for a run along the Avon / Ōtākaro trail to New Brighton.

Thanks to everyone who took part — looking forward to the next one!

More reasons to celebrate in the Babbage office today!

We are very excited to congratulate Babbage Fire Engineer, Amit Krishna, on his recent recognition by the Engineering New Zealand panel as a "Chartered Engineer Specialising in Fire Engineering".

When asked, Amit said that this achievement was well worth all the hard work, and that he "couldn't have done it without an amazing manager like Tom, who mentored me and facilitated opportunities to lead projects on my own".

We’re incredibly proud of Amit, and of the supportive culture that helps our people grow, shine and succeed.

Swipe to read more about Amit’s journey to becoming chartered!

Last Thursday marked Wayne Campton’s final day with Babbage, as he retires after 42 years of building and supporting our geotechnical laboratory capability.

Wayne joined Babbage in 1984, a few years after the Babbage Geotechnical Team was established in the late 1970s. His first role was as a technician at the Maramarua coalfields.

Over the years, Wayne has become widely recognised for his expertise in geotechnical laboratory testing. He also undertook audits and reviews of laboratories across New Zealand on behalf of IANZ, assessing competency and supporting industry standards.

His knowledge, commitment to quality, and steady presence have been highly valued, and many colleagues have benefited from his expertise and mentorship.

For the past 25 years, Wayne has worked closely with Babbage's Assistant Lab Manager and Engineering Geologist, Justin Franklin, and together they have maintained the high standards for which our laboratory is known. With Wayne’s retirement, Justin will step into the role of Laboratory Manager, continuing the leadership of the lab team.

Please join us in wishing Wayne all the very best for his retirement and thanking him for his significant contribution to Babbage of over more than four decades.

Thanks Wayne, and all the very best for the next chapter!!!

It was great to see Babbage’s Stijn Van den Eeden (Associate Principal – External Envelope) presenting at the Building Science Summit NZ, held on 2, 4 and 6 March in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

Stijn shared practical insights on designing and installing warm roofs – a timely topic as the industry works to improve building performance and embrace new technologies that help future-proof our buildings. Drawing on project experience, he highlighted common challenges he has encountered and outlined a range of practical safety nets to consider when using this approach.

“The audience was very engaged with this hot topic and contributed in depth to the conversation,” says Stijn.

The summit brought together hundreds of international and local building science experts and industry leaders, creating valuable discussion around durability, resilience, and performance in the built environment.

A big thank you to Pro Clima NZ Ltd for the opportunity for Babbage to be involved and for organising such a well-attended and insightful event.

It was another fantastic turnout from Team Babbage at the weekend’s Round the Bays! 🏃‍♂️

Around 60 Babbage participants, proudly sponsored by the company, pulled on the navy blue to take part in what is New Zealand’s largest fun run, held in Auckland.

With great crowd support and perfect running conditions, it was a brilliant day for the Babbage crew walking, jogging and running their way to the finish line.

Among the Babbage team, first across the finish line and fastest on the day was new recruit Thomas Simpson, finishing in 36:54, just 14 seconds shy of the Babbage record set in 2024. Close behind was current champ Tom Coup with a strong time of 37:49. In the women’s division, Mya Hemus led the Babbage field, crossing the line in 49:37, just ahead of Ivy Lo in 49:45 – well done to you all!

After the finish line it was on to the hospitality tent Madills Farm for some well-earned food, drinks and plenty of high-fives. 👏

A huge thanks goes to the Babbage Social Club for organising yet another great event for the Team.

Next goal: 100 Babbage participants on the start line!
