At Auckland Cams we just finished a camshaft upgrade on a 1973 Isuzu 117 coupe with the twin cam G180W engine. The Isuzu 117 Coupé is a compact Gran Turismo type 2-door fastback coupé, which was produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Isuzu, between 1968 and 1981.The 117 Coupé was styled by the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro, being one of the first Japanese cars designed by an Italian stylist. Giorgetto Giugiaro is famous for designing cars like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, De Tomaso, Iso Grifo, Maserati, BMW M1. Lotus Esprit and of course the DMC Delorean (back to the future movie car).

Another interesting project we finished today is this 1939 Lincoln Zephyr Continental V12 camshaft. The engine is a 267ci (4.4L) 12 cylinder Flat head rated at 110hp . We custom re-profiled the camshaft to give the engine more low and mid range power and torque. This engine was based on an early Ford Flat head V8 with 4 cylinders added. Also one of the first production engines to utilize self adjusting hydraulic lifters.

Not every day you get to work on some legendary Cosworth BDA camshafts. Here are two rally cams that Auckland Cams finished today.
Cosworth originally designed the BDA for Ford back in 1969. Cosworth developed a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine for road use in the Ford Es**rt. The engine was designed for FIA Group 2 and Group 4 on either rallying or touring car racing purpose. The nominal homologation at 1601 cc capacity meant that BDA-engined cars competed in what was usually the top class (1600 cc and up) so were eligible for overall victories rather than class wins.

Every day is awesome at Auckland Cams. Today's awesome is working on a camshaft out of a 1969 dodge Charger R/T with the legendary 426ci Hemi engine. The street Hemi version was factory rated at 425 bhp at 5000 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft of torque at 4000 rpm when equipped with a pair of four-barrel Carter AFB carburetors. In actual dyno testing, these engine produced considerably more.

Today we finished restoring two pairs of cams. One for a 1981 Porsche 911 SC 3.0L Carrera and another pair 1969 Porsche 911T 2.0L.

Sometimes we don't see a particular engine cams for years and then two in one day!

The Porsche 911 is still going strong today, but back in 1979 the iconic 911 nearly went extinct! True story, the decision to keep the 911 in the product line occurred one afternoon in the office of Dr. Helmuth Bott, the Porsche operating board member responsible for all engineering and development.
Peter Schutz (CEO of Porsche at that time) noticed a chart on the wall of Dr. Helmuth Bott's office. It depicted the ongoing development schedules for the three primary Porsche product lines: 944, 928 and 911. Two of them stretched far into the future, but the 911 program stopped at the end of 1981.
Porsche CEO Peter Schutz got up from his chair, walked over to the chart, took a black marker pen, and extended the 911 program bar clean off the chart. The Porsche 911, the company icon, had been saved in one afternoon with a black marker pen, and many believe the company name (Porsche) was saved with it.

Some months ago we designed a custom camshaft for a 1930 Ford Model A fitted with OHV (Over Head Valve) cylinder head conversion and twin down drought carburetors. Today the owner came in to my shop to show of his pride and joy. This has to be one of the nicest Model A I have ever seen. Much credit to the owner, who did most of the restoration himself.

Today we finished something very special. A 325ci Ford Flathead V8 camshaft, custom made from one piece billet M238 alloy steel.

This camshaft will be used in an engine to try to set a new world record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA.

The Ford Flathead, introduced as Ford's first V8 in 1932, is considered an "old tech" relic at best in modern racing circles. When Bonneville Speed Week was first held in 1949, there certainly was no Toyota 2JZ around. There was no 426 Hemi either, and the Chevy smallblock V-8 was still years away. In abundance, however, was Ford’s famous Flathead V8, and it powered hundreds of racers on to land speed records. Today, there are vintage engine classes for those that still want to run a Flathead and chase records in the same classes that made history at Bonneville way back when.
For those not up on Bonneville class lingo, XF is the engine class for any production Ford/Mercury Flathead V8 engine, 1932–1953, up to 325 cubic inches.” The ‘GR’ in ‘XF/GR’ stands for Gas Roadster, which means the car must be powered by the race fuel provided on the salt.

Everyday is different at Auckland Cams. Today we upgraded a pair of JB-DET cams out of a 2005 Daihatsu Copen. Styling of the Daihatsu Copen was inspired by the Audi TT Roadster. The Copen was originally designed with a JB-DET 660 cc turbocharged 4 cylinder twin cam engine in order to meet Japanese KEI car regulations, however this engine did not meet environmental emissions standards in several countries and from 2007-on the engine was replaced by a 1.3L non turbo engine.
