Not all Dyneema rope is the same.

Marlow Ropes explains that not all Dyneema ropes are created equal, and the difference often comes down to heat treatment and pre-stretching.

Why does that matter? For halyards, standing rigging and high-load applications, less stretch means better load holding, improved sail shape, and less movement once the rope is under tension.

Heat treatment helps the rope hold its shape and stay strong at smaller diameters. Pre-stretching removes the initial bedding-in stretch, helping the rope perform more consistently from the start.

Marlow heat treats and pre-stretches all of its D12 Dyneema cores as part of its manufacturing process, with the D12 MAX range taking this even further for maximum strength and minimal stretch.

If you’re choosing rope for a refit, new build or performance upgrade, this is the kind of detail worth getting right.

The Harken MKIV Ocean furling system is built for easy furling and reefing from the cockpit, while helping maintain great sail shape.

Multiple rows of Torlon® ball bearings help keep friction low, making furling smoother and easier. It’s also made from hardcoat-anodised, UV-stabilised aluminium, with bearings that require no lubrication for simple maintenance.

Same Harken quality as the MKIV racing range, without the extra features cruisers don't need.

Christchurch and Lyttelton were next on Paul’s South Island run.

This part of the trip was all about understanding how the local marine network fits together, from traditional chandlery to sailing-specific through to service work and commercial marine support.

Paul caught up with Boat NZ, Oborn's Nautical, Burnsco Tower Junction and DCMARINE, with conversations covering everything from current product to local boat owner needs to the role Christchurch businesses play in supporting boats across Lyttelton, Waikawa, Nelson and Picton.

The trip also highlighted another important part of what we do through Harken Safety & Rescue, with visits to specialist customers including NZ Access Ltd, Skilllab, Aspiring Safety and Outsider Mountain Sports. We’ll be sharing more on the Harken Safety & Rescue range soon, so stay tuned.

It’s a different marine landscape to Auckland, but the same thing matters everywhere: good products, practical knowledge, and strong relationships with the people keeping boats on the water.

Happy International Dog Day to the real captains of the boat. 🐾

From dockside supervisors to salty sea dogs, every good crew needs a four-legged member keeping watch.

And for the dogs who love being on or around the water, the Spinlock FIDO Pet Floatation Vest is designed to help keep them safer and more comfortable while they’re part of the adventure.

It’s lightweight, adjustable, and has a handy back handle for easy lifting and retrieval from the water.

Got a boat dog? We’d love to see pictures of them in the comments!

Paul has been busy on the road through the top of the South Island, visiting customers across Nelson, Havelock, Picton, Waikawa and Blenheim.

The trip included catch-ups with Ropetek Rigging & Yacht Supplies, Osprey Boats, DNA Boats, TOTS Marine Coatings, Boatbuilders, Havelock Slipway, Sounds Marine, Westshore Marine Ltd, Elite Boat Builders and Refinishing Ltd, Oddies Marine Equipment Specialists, KJL Sail Ltd and NZ Access Ltd.

From marina precincts and boatyards to boat builders, chandleries and marine service teams, it was a great chance to see what people are working on and talk through how we can support them with the right gear and product knowledge.

A big part of what we do happens beyond the Westhaven store, and it’s always good to stay connected with the people and businesses keeping New Zealand’s marine industry moving.

And as far as customer visits go, the South Island views are pretty hard to beat.

Winter racing is better with dry feet.

Cold mornings, wet decks and long days on the rail are all part of the season. Soggy socks don’t have to be.

If your sea boots have seen better days, check out the Dubarry range on our website or in store!

What a great result for New Zealand sailing!

At the 2026 29er World Championships in Kiel, Germany, New Zealand was crowned the top 29er nation, taking out the Nations Cup after all five Kiwi crews qualified for the gold fleet from a field of nearly 300 boats.

A huge congratulations to Bella Jenkins and Jess Handley, who claimed the Female Under-19 World Championship title and finished second in the overall female division.

It was an incredible effort from the whole New Zealand squad, with three Kiwi crews finishing inside the overall top 10.

A lot of these young sailors are familiar faces through our doors at Westhaven, and we’re looking forward to seeing them back in store after such a huge result.
