Stormwater is a taonga.

Geraldine recently attended the Stormwater Conference & Expo 2026 in Tāmaki Makaurau, spending three days learning, connecting and exploring the future of stormwater management in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

As part of the conference, Geraldine visited two South Auckland projects:

*Te Aka Raataa, Stage 1, Wiri - A stream naturalisation project.
*Hayman Park / Manukau Noa Iho, Manukau CBD - A park regeneration project with a new wetland and gross pollutant trap.

Geraldine came away inspired by the work being done, and with one key takeaway: engineers need to speak plainly. This reflects a core part of our philosophy at Markplan: you shouldn’t have to be an engineer to deal with one. Stormwater projects can be complex, but clear communication helps people understand what is happening, why it matters, and how these projects help shape healthier places to live.

🏗️ A recent project at the boutique Grand Hotel & Casino Vanuatu, highlights the value of practical seismic engineering in existing buildings.

Working with Cyrille Mainguy of Mainguy Consulting Engineer and Project Management and Vancorp Construction, our team focused on critical seismic strengthening utilising in-situ reinforcement of shear walls and the introduction of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP). FRP is a commonly used seismic strengthening material that provides tensile strength while doubling as a fantastic space-saver.

Our team conducted a site walkthrough after completion with the hotel’s Managing Director, Bettina Mahieu, and were thoroughly impressed by the high quality of construction. These strengthening works have meaningfully improved the building’s resilience, helping ensure it remains fit for continued use for many years to come, supporting both the client and the wider community.

It was also a unique highlight to see Markplan featured in the New Zealand Herald! Engineers don't often get a spotlight in the travel inserts, so we are thrilled to see the "bones" of a beautiful destination get some well-deserved recognition.

A meaningful morning, last Wednesday, in Warkworth at The Power of Support Women’s Breakfast.

Vivienne, Ashley and Lauren attended the before-work event, which brought local women together to reflect on what support really looks like in life, work and community.

We heard from guest speaker media personality Matilda Green, who spoke openly about support through career, motherhood and life’s changing seasons. One line that really stayed with us was:

“To have community, you need to be community.”

We also heard from the inspiring speakers from Hestia Rodney Women's Refuge, who shared raw and important insight into their work supporting women to rebuild and move forward after crisis.

Thank you to WRMK Lawyers for hosting and delivering such a thoughtful event, and to One Mahurangi, Warkworth, Warkworth Business Association for supporting it.

A powerful reminder of the value of connection, community and showing up for one another.

Meet Lauren, who has recently joined the Markplan team in our Auckland office as Sales and Administration Support.

Lauren brings a background in communications, marketing, events and administration, mostly across the not-for-profit and community sector.

Outside of work, Lauren loves nature, native birdsong, interesting art and music, and getting outdoors whenever she can. This photo was taken at the top of the Duke’s Nose summit in Northland, with birdsong in the background (sound on) from one of her favourite walks at Tāwharanui.

We’re thrilled to have Lauren join us! Head to our website to learn more about Lauren and the rest of the Markplan team: https://markplan.co.nz/our-people/our-team/

Last week, Glen had the pleasure of heading along to a Wao Aotearoa Better Building breakfast event in Queenstown and it’s safe to say it was a pretty inspiring way to start the day.

The session launched This Is How We Build, a new training series focused on building smarter, reducing waste, and creating more resilient spaces for the future. With so many great minds in the room, from across the building and construction sector, the kōrero was both informative and thought provoking.

One clear message really stood out:
Design out the waste. When there is waste, find something positive to do with it.

And speaking of doing something positive with waste… Glen was lucky enough to win and walk away with this cute benchtop compost bin from the event. 👏 A great reminder that small, practical changes can make a real difference.

Big thanks to Wao Aotearoa Better Building for hosting such an engaging and insightful morning. It’s clear there’s a real momentum building towards a more circular, sustainable future in our industry 🌱

🏡 We are proud to have provided the structural engineering for this stunning home in Ramarama, Auckland. Our task was to create a strong, reliable structure that supports the home’s modern layout and its beautiful architectural features.

This project was a great collaboration with Sentinel Homes – Counties/Franklin and other partners. It’s always rewarding to see our engineering form the backbone of a home as striking as this one!

👟 February Step Challenge – Done & Dusted!

Our team created a Step Challenge and let’s just say… the competition was real. A total of about 6 million steps walked by the team members participating 🔥

From lunchtime walks to after-hours missions, the step counts climbing on the leaderboard were seriously impressive. A huge shoutout to Tatiana, who took out the overall individual win 🏆 with Liam not too far behind!

Great to see everyone get involved and backing each other – just one of the many things that makes our team what it is.

Here’s a glimpse of some of the walks!

Big welcome to Tish to our team in Wānaka! 👏

We’re thrilled to have Tish join Markplan as our new Accounts Administrator, bringing a wealth of experience. Alongside looking after the Wānaka office and keeping everything running smoothly there, Tish supports our Auckland team.

When she’s not in the office, you'll find her spending time with her horse, Crunchie🐴(which we think is an excellent name choice).

A recent project where we designed a subframe for an Archi-Line facade 🏢

A facade is the external “face” of a building – what you see from the street. It plays a big role in both how a building looks and how it performs, protecting it from the elements while delivering the architectural vision.

Archi-Line, by PSP Building Products, is a state-of-the-art aluminium batten system that mimics the look, feel, and texture of real wood, giving a natural, warm aesthetic with the durability and low maintenance of aluminium. For this project at JSC - Premium Architectural & Building Solutions, we designed a precise subframe that sits behind the Archi-Line, acting as the hidden structural skeleton everything attaches to.

This is a great example of how good structural engineering quietly supports great architecture behind the scenes.

If you’re interested in learning more about how we bring facades like Archi-Line to life, get in touch!
