BANMANCHE, the himalayan courtyard
PROJECT TYPE: Restaurant & Bar
LOCATION: Uttardhoka, Kathmandu
STATUS: Completed
Banmanche - Himalayan yeti, is conceived as a modern courtyard retreat, deeply rooted in the cultural history of the Himalayas. Its location in Uttardhoka sits amidst dense urban fabric, where outdoor breathing spaces are scarce. A careful site study revealed the need for openness, daylight, and inward-looking quality spaces, leading to the revival of the courtyard typology as the central organizing element of the design. Parking and services are intentionally pushed to the edges of the site, allowing the courtyard to emerge as a vibrant and welcoming heart of the restaurant.

PROJECT: FACADE | SPACE REVITALIZATION
CLIENT: .lakeside
This building showcases a thoughtful renovation that transforms a pre-existing structure into a vibrant mixed-use commercial space. From an architectural standpoint, the design introduces contemporary interventions to elevate both aesthetics and functionality. The most striking upgrade is the bold red perforated metal cladding applied to the facade. This not only provides a fresh, dynamic visual identity but also acts as a modern skin that conceals the older structure behind, creating depth, texture, and rhythm. The cladding is carefully layered over the existing facade, giving the building a cohesive and sophisticated appearance, especially when illuminated at night.
The ground floor maintains open and transparent access to branded retail stores through full-height glazing and defined arched entries that invite pedestrian flow from the street. Vertical circulation is achieved through an external staircase and internal core, leading to a mid-level restaurant space that offers a semi-outdoor dining experience, enhanced by glass railings and landscaped terrace seating. At the uppermost level, restaurant lounge are capped by a large overhanging roof with wooden soffits, adding warmth and shade to the rooftop area.
The courtyard at the rear or inner section of the building introduces a human-centric spatial experience with curvilinear balconies wrapped in greenery. These planted railings and pendant lighting elements bring in a soft, biophilic character that contrasts and complements the modern materials used elsewhere. The renovation focuses not just on visual impact, but also on user comfort and experiential quality, making this a standout example of adaptive reuse and façade enhancement in an urban setting.

THE PROJECT: BAR & COCTAILS
THE CLIENT: .drinks
The Old House Bar reflects a refined fusion of traditional Newari heritage and modern hospitality. Set around a central courtyard, the plan embraces open-air dining, intuitive circulation, and atmospheric zoning. The architecture showcases an honest structural expression—exposed steel beams, brick infill, and wooden pergolas—recalling vernacular methods within a modern industrial palette.

The bar’s materiality is rich and tactile: warm-toned brick, slate, terracotta tiles, and textured stucco define the space. Skylights and louvered wooden shutters invite light and ventilation, while handcrafted copper lighting and decorative elements evoke cultural nostalgia. Inspired by Newar timber details, the metal columns reinterpret traditional motifs in a minimalist form.

Key features include a central waterbody, layered lighting, and curated decor—like Bhairab masks and tribal art—imbuing the space with reverence and storytelling. From casual courtyard gatherings to cozy indoor dining, the design creates a culturally immersive, contemporary bar experience rooted in place and memory.
