Today, Earthquake Safety Solutions (ESS) successfully conducted a comprehensive earthquake evacuation drill at Brihaspati Vidya Sadan and RAI School, both located in Kathmandu.
The drill was built upon recent earthquake preparedness orientations delivered to students, teachers, and staff of both schools. These orientations covered essential knowledge and skills for responding safely during an earthquake.
Since the two schools share the same premises, the drill was conducted simultaneously. It began with a one-minute siren simulating the onset of an earthquake. During this period, students and staff practiced the Drop, Cover, and Hold technique wherever they were. After the siren sounded, they evacuated along pre-designated routes and assembled in their respective designated open spaces, as outlined in each school's evacuation plan.
Class teachers conducted headcounts to ensure all students were accounted for. Once confirmed, the Incident Commander officially concluded the drill.
The drill engaged over 2,000 participants, including students, faculty, and staff. A team of eight ESS professionals facilitated, observed, and guided the entire process to ensure safety and adherence to best practices.
After the drill, a debriefing session was held with key school personnel, including teachers, in-charges, evacuation coordinators, and Incident Commanders. The ESS team shared photos and videos of the event, and participants reflected on what went well and identified areas for improvement.
These kinds of preparedness activities are essential for strengthening the capacity of school communities. They build awareness, confidence, and life-saving knowledge about how to act safely during and after an earthquake, not only for oneself but also for the protection of others.

• Grade 3 (106 students): The session combined fun activities and demonstrations to help students understand earthquake safety practically and memorably.
• Grade 4 (97 students): A transition-level session that focused on recognizing potential hazards and learning simple preparedness actions.
• Grade 5 (105 students): This session emphasized the basic science of earthquakes and introduced non-structural safety tips for home and school environments using visuals and examples.
• Grade 6 (94 students): Students participated in interactive discussions and explored real-life scenarios to understand the effects of earthquakes and the importance of readiness.
• Grades 7 and 8 (146 students): These sessions delved into the causes and consequences of earthquakes, with students learning about practical risk mitigation strategies and personal preparedness plans.
• Grades 9 and 10 (100 students): The final session of the day offered a comprehensive overview of earthquake risk management and preparedness strategies. Students were encouraged to take the training and receive First Aid certification.
A total of 830 students participated in the orientation sessions throughout the day. Teachers from each class also joined the sessions to help reinforce key messages on earthquake safety in regular classroom learning.
Through such comprehensive, age-appropriate programs, ESS continues its mission to nurture a generation that is aware, prepared, and empowered to act safely during emergencies.
