The maintenance of early warning system devices installed at greater heights has been a major challenge for us for many years.

To address this issue, we have now developed an innovative solution that significantly reduces the difficulties faced during field maintenance works.

We hope this innovation will make maintenance tasks easier and help ensure the seamless operation of the early warning system for providing uninterrupted warning information to vulnerable communities.

Environmental flow monitoring is very crucial for maintaining river ecosystem, riverine biodiversity, downstream water allocation, and overall river health, but accurate measurement is challenging due to very low flow conditions.

To address this, we have designed and installed a site-specific V-notch assembly capable of measuring flows from a few liters per second up to several hundred lps, aligned with international standards. The system is already tested and functioning well in the field.

This setup is part of our scientific research in hydrological monitoring. With the addition of automatic water level sensors and telemetry, it can be upgraded into a fully automated and real-time monitoring station.

We hope such innovations support better ecosystem protection, compliance of environmental flow release, informed water allocation, and sustainable river management.

We are currently deploying SLAM LiDAR technology for the detailed inventory survey of an irrigation canal project, bringing accuracy and efficiency to field data collection.

During the site investigation, several key assessments were performed, including:• Crack monitoring• Hammer testing for structural integrity• Detailed visual inspection of hydraulic structures

In parallel, SLAM LiDAR was used to capture high-density spatial data, enabling the generation of precise point clouds and the preparation of accurate 3D maps of the canal and associated structures.

Key advantages of using SLAM LiDAR in irrigation barrage inventory surveys:• Rapid data collection even in complex and inaccessible areas• High accuracy and detailed geometric representation• Reduced dependency on traditional manual measurements• Improved safety by minimizing exposure in risky zones• Enhanced visualization for analysis, design, and rehabilitation planning• Efficient documentation for long-term asset management

This integration of advanced surveying technology with conventional inspection methods is significantly improving the quality and reliability of irrigation infrastructure assessment.

We are pleased to share the successful completion of our Inception Report Presentation of the project “Update of Climate Change Study in Nepal” for Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM).

The overall objective of the study is to rigorously analyze Global Climate Models (GCMs) for Nepal under SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5 scenarios, identifying the most representative models for future climate extremes and generating high-quality, bias-corrected datasets for multi-level planning. The major work scope includes:
✔️ Acquisition and processing of CMIP6-based daily GCM datasets under multiple climate scenarios
✔️ Scientific selection of representative models using the Envelope Approach (capturing “cold-dry”, “cold-wet”, “warm-dry”, and “warm-wet” futures)
✔️ Statistical downscaling and bias correction of temperature and precipitation data (1981–2100) at 0.1° resolution across Nepal
✔️ Generation of time-series datasets at national, provincial, district, and physiographic levels
✔️ Comparative assessment of selected models against existing benchmark models
✔️ Preparation of technical reports and facilitation of knowledge-sharing workshops

We have successfully installed a flood monitoring sensor in the Narayani River to collect real-time hydrological data. The primary objective is to ensure timely communication of flood information to downstream vulnerable communities for early preparedness and response.

The collected flood data will be used to generate SMS alerts and can be further integrated with a Multi-Hazard Audio Warning System (MHAWS). This integrated system will help disseminate timely warnings to downstream communities, thereby minimizing the risk of loss of life and property.

We have developed an innovative solution (Smart Flood Tower) for disseminating flood information to the vulnerable community.

The Smart Flood Tower delivers flood warning information through high-intensity visual warning lights. It is connected to flood monitoring sensors via a wireless or mobile network. When water levels at monitoring locations exceed predefined warning or danger thresholds, the flood monitoring station automatically activates the Smart Flood Tower, triggering distinct warning signals.

Ongoing Mega Project – Approx. 500 KM Cross-Section Survey

IES is currently conducting an intensive river cross-section survey covering approximately 500 KM across multiple river basins in Nepal.
The primary objective of this work is to generate precise data for detailed river modeling, supporting accurate analysis and future planning.

As part of the ongoing progress, our team is currently performing fieldwork in the Mohana–Khutiya Basin of the Far Western Province.
We are proud of our dedicated team working tirelessly in the field.
