It’s Measure Monday!⚡️
Nepal’s rivers could do more than power homes. Could they power the world’s data? 📊

With 83,000 MW Nepal has theoretical hydropower potential, and is currently using less than 8% of it. This week, a Nepali delegation was in Washington pitching a bold idea: “hydro-to-data”, using that clean energy surplus to attract AI data centres and digital infrastructure.

Kathmandu isn’t just polluted, it’s operating far beyond safe limits.
From PM2.5 spikes to hazardous AQI levels, the numbers reveal a crisis we can no longer ignore.

This isn’t just environmental, it’s a public health emergency.

📊 Because what we measure, we can change.

It’s Measure Monday 💧
Nepal is rich in water resources, with over 6,000 rivers, glaciers, and seasonal monsoons. Yet, only around 25% of the population has access to fully functional drinking water systems. This results in a clear paradox: abundance at the source, scarcity at the tap.

Today, the world observes the International Day of Zero Waste, with this year’s focus on fashion and textiles 👚
Did you know the fashion industry generates 92 million tonnes of textile waste every year? In Nepal, that waste is very real - from Kathmandu’s overflowing landfills to rivers choking with discarded clothes. Even a traditional recycling practice, Kalo Rooi, is being undercut by cheap imports. What would it take to turn this around?

Event Recap on Women in Engineering: A meaningful Guest Speaker & Panel Discussion 🎤
On March 19, Engineers Without Borders Nepal hosted an afternoon of storytelling, reflection, and connection at Kathmandu Pragya Kunja School.
The event featured a keynote by Dr. Rojee Pradhananga (Transportation Engineer), followed by a panel discussion featuring Aastha Pandey (Environmental Planner), Astha Acharya (Civil Engineer), Palisha Shakya (Chemical Engineer), and Nitisha Kafle (Civil Engineer), moderated by Bijita Parajuli (Architect). Each panelist shared their own experiences which highlighted the obstacles they encountered and the strategies they used to overcome them.
A common thread throughout? Mentorship, community, and self-belief. The panelists spoke openly about the evolving landscape of engineering in Nepal, acknowledging the progress made, while recognizing the work still ahead in building more inclusive spaces.
The session wrapped up with a high tea session, giving attendees the chance to connect and continue the conversation. Thank you to all our speakers, panelists, and attendees for making it a meaningful event! 🙏

As part of Women in Engineering, we present a powerful panel discussion on Engineering Equality: Women Navigating Academia and Industry; a conversation shaped by diverse journeys, disciplines, and lived experiences.

Aastha Pandey, with academic foundations spanning Kathmandu University, ITPCAS–UCAS (China), and Stockholm University, brings a global perspective rooted in environmental systems, hydrogeochemistry, and sustainable planning. Her work in nature-based and circular solutions reflects a commitment to regenerative development and bridging people with the systems that sustain them.

Nitisha Kafle, a Structural Engineer trained at Advanced College of Engineering & Management and the Asian Institute of Technology, combines technical precision with social responsibility. From structural design to community-led and disaster recovery initiatives, she is driven by the belief that resilient infrastructure must go hand in hand with resilient communities.

Astha Acharya, a Civil Engineer with advanced studies in management, public administration, and disaster resilience including at the University of Newcastle as an Australia Awards Scholar, has dedicated her career to disaster risk reduction and post-earthquake recovery in Nepal. With a people-first approach, she transforms complex engineering challenges into practical, community-centered solutions.

Palisha Shakya, a Chemical Engineer with a Master of Engineering (Hons) from the University of Nottingham, brings expertise in research, nanocomposites, and process design, alongside strong project management and analytical skills. Currently teaching A-Level students at Rato Bangala School, she integrates engineering knowledge with education to develop thoughtful, real-world impact.

Together, they represent the evolving face of engineering; technical excellence guided by equity, resilience, and purpose.
