🌍 Case Study: Urban Environmental Exposure in Thessaloniki, Greece

The city of Thessaloniki, one of the largest urban centers in the Balkans, faces significant environmental challenges due to dense population, heavy traffic congestion, and mixed land-use patterns. With over one million residents and substantial industrial activity, the city presents a critical case for understanding urban environmental stressors.

📈 Key Findings
🚦 Transport Mode Exposure
▪️ Motorcyclists experienced the highest exposure to both air pollutants and noise
▪️ Car users showed moderate exposure, particularly to air pollution
▪️ Pedestrians & cyclists had lower pollutant concentrations, but:
▪️ Cyclists may face higher intake due to increased breathing rates

👉 This highlights the importance of considering dose, not just exposure levels.

At ARTISTA, this case study highlights;
✔️ Integrated Urban Design Strategies
▪️ Prioritize low-exposure transport corridors
▪️ Reduce traffic congestion in dense urban cores
▪️ Promote pedestrian-friendly and ventilated street layouts
✔️ Data-Driven Decision Making
▪️ Adopt combined environmental indicators (CEF/CDEF)
▪️ Move beyond isolated air or noise assessments
✔️ Health-Centric Infrastructure Planning
▪️ Protect vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists)
▪️ Incorporate urban ventilation and dispersion planning

Learning from the Ground Beneath: The Value of Local Knowledge in Construction

In building construction, one of the most overlooked yet critical steps is understanding the land’s history and local knowledge.

Before construction begins, it is good practice to assess how existing buildings in the area have performed over time—especially during past earthquakes and natural events. Such observations can reveal hidden vulnerabilities of the site, including risks related to:
Landslides and slope instability
Soil erosion
Land subsidence
Soil liquefaction

These natural susceptibilities are often deeply tied to the geological characteristics of the area and may not always be evident through surface-level inspection alone.

Equally important is the evaluation of traditional and local practices used to manage these hazards. While local methods may offer valuable insights, they must be carefully assessed against modern engineering standards and acceptable risk levels to ensure safety and resilience.

At ARTISTA Engineering Consultancy, we emphasize integrating local experience with scientific analysis to deliver structures that are not only efficient but also resilient and context-sensitive.

Because safe design begins with understanding the story of the ground we build on.

🏗️ Safe Parapet Design Matters!

Parapets above roofs and along balcony edges are often overlooked—but they play a critical role in safety during earthquakes.

🔹 Height Limitation
Parapets should not exceed 1 meter in height to reduce the risk of overturning during seismic shaking.
🔹 Proper Construction
They should be:
▪ Constructed in Reinforced Concrete (RC), or
▪ Strengthened with vertical RC elements
🔹 Spacing of RC Elements
▪ Vertical RC posts should be placed at a maximum spacing of 1.5 meters
🔹 Structural Detailing
▪ RC post section: b × 75 mm (where b = thickness of parapet)
▪ Reinforcement: (i) 2 vertical bars (8 mm dia, Fe-415 steel); (b) 6 mm dia transverse links @ 150 mm c/c
🔹 Anchorage Requirement
▪ Vertical reinforcement must be properly anchored into the slab or beam below
▪ Minimum embedment length: 300 mm

⚠️ Why it matters:
Poorly constructed parapets are highly vulnerable during earthquakes and can collapse outward, posing serious risks to life and property.

At ARTISTA Engineering Consultancy, we emphasize practical, code-compliant, and resilient design solutions to ensure safer buildings across Nepal.

Flower Pots on Parapets: A Hidden Seismic Risk 🌿⚠️

In many buildings, placing flower pots on parapets is a common practice to enhance aesthetics. However, during an earthquake, these seemingly harmless elements can become dangerous falling hazards.

🚫 Avoid placing flower pots on parapets whenever possible.
Falling objects during seismic shaking can cause serious injuries and damage.

✅ If placement is necessary, ensure proper safety measures:
☑ Secure each pot with adequate wiring
☑ Anchor them firmly using pre-fixed steel hooks or anchors
☑ Ensure the fixing system can withstand strong earthquake shaking

🌍 Even small safety precautions can significantly reduce risks during earthquakes.

At ARTISTA Engineering Consultancy, we emphasize practical and code-compliant solutions to enhance building safety and protect lives.

Evolution of NBC 205
Before the 1990s, Nepal saw a rapid rise in the construction of reinforced concrete (RC) framed buildings across urban and semi-urban areas. While these structures symbolized modernization, many were constructed without proper structural design—often relying solely on the experience of mid-level technicians and local masons.

As a result, a large number of these buildings are highly vulnerable to earthquake forces that are likely to occur in Nepal. Despite being built with modern materials like reinforced concrete, the lack of engineering oversight has made them a potential risk to human life during seismic events.

Earthquakes cannot be prevented—but their impact can be significantly reduced through proper design and construction practices.

Recognizing this critical issue, 205 (Mandatory Rules of Thumb for Reinforced Concrete Buildings without Masonry Infill) was introduced in 1994. This code provides simplified yet effective guidelines to ensure safer construction practices, especially for buildings that may not undergo detailed structural analysis.

At ARTISTA Engineering Consultancy, we strongly advocate for:
✔️ Compliance with Nepal Building Codes
✔️ Professional design and supervision
✔️ Safer and more resilient practices

Let’s build not just for today—but for , , and the future.

Learning from the Past, Building for the Future

The devastating earthquakes in Nepal’s history have clearly revealed the vulnerability of many traditional and vernacular buildings. Significant loss of life and property occurred due to the collapse of structures constructed with load-bearing masonry elements.

Earthquakes are natural phenomena that cannot be prevented or precisely predicted. However, the scale of destruction they cause can be significantly reduced.

The key lies in adopting seismic-resistant construction practices by:
▪ Using locally available materials wisely
▪ Incorporing seismic bands and reinforcements
▪ Ensuring proper connections between structural elements
▪ Following codal provisions such as the Nepal National Building Code ( )

we can transform vulnerable buildings into safer, more .

At ARTISTA Engineering Consultancy, we are committed to promoting safer construction practices by integrating engineering principles with practical, locally adaptable .
