Bhote Pipal is nature’s miracle in Mustang’s barren landscape. Thriving above 3,000m where others fail, it adapts with remarkable speed. Structurally, it serves as the backbone of Himalayan architecture, used as primary beams and pillars in traditional homes and monasteries.
Its rapid growth and local availability enable sustainable construction in this high-altitude region. We focus on blending indigenous materials with engineering precision.

Inaugurating the Santi Santawana Mandap

We are beyond proud to announce the inauguration of the Santi Santawana Mandap, a structure that stands as a testament to the power of Nepali natural materials and collective vision.

Located along the ancient Sankhamul corridor—a zone already breathing with centuries of architecture and heritage—this pavilion serves a sacred purpose. It was built to offer a moment of peace and solace for those performing cremation rituals by the river, while also providing a cool, shaded resting spot for every passerby.

Redefining the "Temporary"

When we first designed the NAST Innovative Cafe, we won with a question in our hearts: How can we change the narrative that bamboo is just a "temporary" material? Today, we’ve answered that.

This Mandap is a scaled-up, permanent extension of that award-winning vision. It proves that with the right engineering and passion, bamboo can inspire future generations and function beautifully in a high-stakes, religious, and public context.

A Symphony of Collaboration

This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without our incredible partners who believe in sustainable, local innovation:

Green Bamboo Creation
Universal Engineering College
ICAS
Lalitpur Metro ward 11

A special thank you to the Lalitpur Metropolitan City for their unwavering support in scaling up this "tiny structure" into a landmark of great religious and social value.

Next time when you are walking through the historic Sankhamul corridor, take a moment to sit under the bamboo canopy and feel the harmony of tradition and modern innovation.

Our vision was never just to build a "café" in the traditional sense.

We imagined a hub for dialogue, refreshment, and interaction.

We leaned into the beauty of "bare." No fancy furniture, no clutter. Just bare walls, bare floors, and our signature bamboo structure. Here, the architecture doesn’t tell you where to sit; the open space invites you to find your own way to exist within it.

Design without Dictation: At NAST, we challenged the idea that a guest needs classic furniture to feel welcome.

Bare Walls & Floors: Clean, honest surfaces that don't distract.

Bamboo Posts: Not just structural elements, but anchors for people to lean on, meet around, and claim as their own.

Flexible Use: The open floor plan invites users to sit, stand, and interact in their own way, making the architecture a participant in the conversation rather than just a backdrop.

A Gift to the Community: In the spirit of collaboration, we are making the designs and construction process images Open Source. Check the Kamero blog soon to download the files and see the full gallery!

Thank you for following this journey. Now, it’s over to the users to write the next chapter.

Can a wall breathe?

At the NAST Innovative Cafe, they do.

The next challenge in our series was finding an affordable, high-quality finish for our cement-plastered bamboo shear walls. We teamed up with Buildx to bring in a Nepali-made bio paint that is literally "Paint that Breathes."

The Bio-Paint Breakdown:

-Local Innovation: Proudly made in Nepal.

-Health First: Low VOCs mean no nasty chemicals or headaches.

-Budget Friendly: The perfect finishing touch for a cost-effective structure.

-Earth-Minded: Naturally beautiful and sustainable.

Sustainability isn’t just about the big bones of a building; it’s about the skin, too.

Stay tuned as we add the finishing touches and make this structure open to users.

How do you create a massive, inviting entrance without breaking the budget and environment?

At Nast innovative cafe, we didn't just want a "door"; we wanted a gateway that connects researchers, innovators, and visitors to the heart of our space.

The Solution: The 100% Opening Door.

We designed our cafe block doors to fold away completely, offering a 100% unobstructed view. Whether you're here to brainstorm the next big idea or just to grab a coffee, the boundary between "inside" and "outside" simply disappears.

Taking a page out of legendary Indian architect Laurie Baker’s playbook, we focused on thin frames and clever layering to keep costs low and structural integrity high:

The Framework: We used a slim 1-inch metal angle for the frame—lightweight yet incredibly durable.

The Panels: A sandwich of 6mm plywood provided the base.

The Zero-Waste Hero: To add thickness and texture, we repurposed wastage treated bamboo mats from our false ceiling.

The Result: Zero waste on-site for the bamboo panels and a high-end, organic aesthetic for a fraction of the cost.

Our windows follow the same logic. Using metal angle frames and 5mm glass, we’ve maximized natural light and visibility. It's proof that we don’t need bulky, expensive materials to create a space that feels open and modern.

Cost-effective design isn't about doing things cheaply; it's about doing things deeply—with thought, care, and respect for materials.
