One of the most challenging jobs I've done so far. A walking cane that required a very high level of precision, but was also usually thin. Made from ebony wood, this walking cane is 920 mm kom and almost entirely Ø 11 mm. Fitted with a Ø35 mm sphere at the end (all one piece) and a hand turned brass pin of 100 mm long at the end.

The part of turning this narrow stem cost me about 1,5 hours alone, to get it right and avoid screw ups.

On a holiday, so no turning this week. Here's a repost of one of my earlier reels this year. I've been struggling to "download" this reel to repost it, because I tend to delete the original files. That's why there is an Instagram watermark over it. Anyway.. if you know a better cleaner way to do this without the original files PLEASE do tell.

These handles have a hole drilled to accept a threaded insert later on. I use the hole to perfectly center the work around the hole. The protruding piece of yellow poplar on the right acts as a mini jamchuck, while the live center makes sure it doesn't move while turning, allowing me to be a little more aggressive with cuts. Slightly smaller than the last ones, so slightly quicker to turn too!

"why is it more expensive if I choose another type of wood?"

Obviously material costs play a role, but often more important is how fast I can turn the parts. For the small pieces material cost is low, so most of the price will be made of labour costs. With this clip I hope to show the difference it makes to turn a very dense wood like lignum vitae compared to a less dense wood like black walnut.

Now 30 seconds difference may seem little, but on batches well over 100 pieces it adds up to quite a substantial amount of time that someone will have to pay for. If I don't calculate it up front in my quotes, I will be the one paying for it.

It doesn't always go this smooth, but it helps when you have a bunch of the same design to make. You'll get into a rhythm and slowly perfect the routines making each cut slightly more efficient than the last.

A nice example of how I make sure every run of a batch ends up the same. Here, I'm using both calipers and duplicating fingers to set out diameters at predetermined points.

How about some pictures for a change?

Let me know if you like to see some stills of the finished products every now and then too.

These are pictures of the finished balusters from my latest reel. Some more clips of that job coming up tomorrow or the day after.

The pencil lines tell me where to start, the smallest diameter on the right tells me where to stop. I just have to make a nice flowing curve in between that resembles the original design as closely as possible.

I love these classical shapes. Batch of 16 balusters in Sapele. Some more pictures and clips of the process and finished product coming up!

Duplicating fingers in action. Love them for batches above 5 where there are a lot of measurements to keep track of.

If you wanna get your hands on some, sells them!

No red line this time. But there is a clear indication of what I'm aiming for. I was asked to restore a part that had broken off of the original piece. Because the shape has already been turned, it's quite an easy task, and takes me about 5 minutes after glueing up.
