Today, Stichting VbV publishes its annual report on vehicle crime in the Netherlands. The new figures show a clear increase in thefts of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Total losses have risen to more than €𝟭𝟮𝟳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, which is 𝟯𝟴% higher than in 2024.

Key findings from the report:
• 𝟳,𝟰𝟵𝟳 stolen passenger cars, an increase of 𝟭𝟮%
• Theft of light commercial vehicles went up by 𝟲%
• Damage costs sharply higher: average loss per stolen car now €𝟭𝟳,𝟬𝟲𝟭
• More vehicles recovered abroad: over 𝟵𝟭𝟯 vehicles, mainly in Germany, Belgium and Bulgaria

Many of these thefts happen through relay attack, a method that has become more common in recent years. Criminals copy and boost the signal from keyless cars, so they can open and start your car in seconds without breaking in and without setting off the alarm.

Stichting VbV presenteert vandaag haar jaarlijkse rapport over voertuigcriminaliteit in Nederland. De cijfers laten opnieuw een sterke stijging zien. In 2025 bedroeg de totale schadelast ruim €𝟭𝟮𝟳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗷𝗼𝗲𝗻, een toename van 𝟯𝟴% ten opzichte van 2024.

Er werden 𝟳.𝟰𝟵𝟳 personenauto’s gestolen, 𝟭𝟮% meer dan vorig jaar. Ook diefstal van lichte bedrijfswagens nam toe met 6%. De gemiddelde schade per gestolen auto steeg naar €𝟭𝟳.𝟬𝟲𝟭. Daarnaast werden meer gestolen voertuigen teruggevonden in het buitenland: ruim 𝟵𝟭𝟯, vooral in Duitsland, België en Bulgarije.

Een deel van deze diefstallen gebeurt via relay attack, een stijgend probleem onder voertuigdiestallen. Criminelen kopiëren het signaal van keyless auto’s en openen en starten voertuigen binnen seconden. Zonder braakschade en zonder alarm.

The Renault Captur is on the list of cars that are easy to steal with relay attack, says the German ADAC in their recent investigation. The newer models '22-'23 could sometimes be opened but not started with relay attack. Thieves could still easily open the car and take out valuable parts.

Most Lexus models have a key that can be turned off. This way the key does not receive signals anymore and the car is protected against relay attack. However, turning off the key requires discipline everytime the owner leaves and locks the car. This is often forgotten. That is why multiple Lexus models were protected with Sleeping Battery.

The Toyota RAV4 hybrid currently tops the list of most stolen vehicles. Why? This compact SUV is in high demand in Africa, where charging stations are not yet commonplace. We are therefore also seeing an increase in orders to secure RAV4s with sleeping battery. This makes it impossible to steal the vehicle at night through a relay attack.
