We've seen engines with only a few hundred hours that needed major repairs…

…and engines with many thousands of hours that were still running like new.

Maintenance, operating conditions and how an engine is used can make a huge difference.

The Yanmar 6LYM-UTE is a powerful 6-cylinder marine diesel engine, well known for its strong performance and compact design.

This particular engine has been thoroughly checked in our workshop, where we inspected the engine, tested its operation and made sure it is ready for the next owner.

A great option for larger motorboats and commercial marine applications where reliable power is important.

🔍 WHAT WENT WRONG?

This impeller has definitely seen better days. 👀

Several blades are damaged or completely missing.

But the most important question is:

Where did the missing pieces go?

They don’t simply disappear.

Pieces of a damaged impeller can travel through the cooling system and become trapped in the heat exchanger, oil cooler or cooling passages, restricting water flow and eventually causing overheating.

So when you find an impeller with missing blades, replacing the impeller is only half the job.

🔧 Always try to find the missing pieces as well.

WEDNESDAY — PARTS KNOWLEDGE ⚙️

Original, OEM or Aftermarket — what’s the difference?

You’ll see these terms everywhere when buying engine parts, but they don’t mean the same thing.

🟢 Original / Genuine
Sold as an original part from the engine manufacturer and supplied in their branding.

🔵 OEM
Made by an original equipment manufacturer, but not necessarily supplied in the engine brand’s packaging.

⚪ Aftermarket
Produced by an independent manufacturer as an alternative to the original part.

Aftermarket doesn’t automatically mean bad quality — and OEM doesn’t mean the same thing as Genuine.

That’s why we clearly specify the type of product in our webshop whenever possible.

For some parts we prefer genuine. For others, a good OEM or aftermarket alternative makes much more sense.

🔧 TECHNICAL TUESDAY — Why exhaust elbows fail from the inside out

A marine diesel exhaust elbow can look perfectly fine on the outside while being almost completely blocked on the inside.

Salt water, heat, exhaust gases and corrosion slowly build up deposits inside the elbow. As the passage becomes smaller, exhaust back pressure increases and cooling-water flow can be reduced.

Possible symptoms include:

• Loss of engine power
• Higher exhaust temperature
• Excessive smoke
• Poor cooling-water flow
• Engine overheating
• In severe cases: water entering the engine

This is why an exhaust elbow should not only be inspected from the outside. On older engines, removing it for an internal inspection can prevent much more expensive damage.

What happens before we sell a used marine engine?

Buying a used engine shouldn’t be a gamble.

Before a used engine is offered for sale, we check and test it in our workshop. Depending on the engine, this includes checking compression, injector, fluids, starting behaviour, cooling, leaks, smoke, charging and general running condition.

And sometimes the most important part is simply listening to the engine. Experienced ears can tell you a lot. 👂🔧

Used doesn’t mean unchecked.

🔧 MarineDustrie doet meer dan alleen motoren en onderdelen leveren!

Naast de verkoop van nieuwe, gebruikte en gereviseerde scheepsmotoren en onderdelen, kunt u bij ons ook terecht voor service en diagnose aan boord.

Zo was één van onze monteurs afgelopen week aan boord van een Contest 36 met elektronische problemen. Na een tocht vanuit Denemarken naar Nederland wilde de motor niet meer starten.

Na een korte diagnose bleek de MDI-unit van de Volvo Penta D2-40 defect te zijn. Deze is vervangen, waarna de motor weer probleemloos startte en alles weer naar behoren werkte.

Of het nu gaat om onderdelen, motoren, revisie of service aan boord: wij helpen u graag verder.
