𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗼
With our extensive fleet of semi-submersible heavy transport vessels, Boskalis has transported a wide variety of cargoes over the years. From massive FPSOs and towering jack-up rigs to impressive monopile foundations for offshore wind farms. But this time, we are transporting a cargo that is still relatively rare in our long track record: fish farming cages.

Recently, our Mighty Servant 3 loaded eighteen sections of brand-new cages built by the Norwegian aquaculture company Seafarming Systems in China. Upon arrival in Norway, this ‘flat pack’ will be assembled into 6 individual cages. Once operational towards the end of this year, they will be the largest closed fish cages in the world. Following the transport of the 385-meter-long fish farm Havfarm 1 by our BOKA Vanguard in 2020, this marks the second time our transport vessels have contributed to an aquaculture project of this kind.

𝗨𝗻𝗼, 𝗱𝗼𝘀, 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀… 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗮𝘆!
Sometimes, a story can be told in just a few numbers. That is certainly true of the work our 5,600 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger Crestway has carried out in Mexico over the past year. In just 𝗼𝗻𝗲 year, our Crestway completed 𝘁𝘄𝗼 full-scale maintenance dredging campaigns in the port of Tuxpan. During the same period, we also worked in the ports of Tampico and Veracruz, bringing the total number of Mexican ports where our Crestway has made its mark to 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲.

Through these maintenance campaigns, Boskalis is making a significant contribution to the accessibility of ports and the flow of container trade along Mexico’s eastern coast. At the same time, we have also deployed a second trailing suction hopper dredger to Mexico. The 12,000 m³ Gateway has recently been working on a capital dredging project on the west coast, following an emergency dredging campaign in Chiapas to help keep that port accessible to cargo vessels.

We thank the crews of the Crestway and the Gateway for their outstanding work in Mexico and thank ASIPONA for the excellent cooperation in Mexico.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿!
With the successful transport of the fully electric catamaran ferry China Zorrilla, Boskalis recently contributed to green mobility on the Rio de la Plata between Buenos Aires in Argentina and Colonia in Uruguay. Buquebus, the owner of the 130-meter ferry, had been eagerly awaiting its arrival and now the wait is finally over.

After a long voyage from Hobart, Tasmania, through the Strait of Magellan, our semi-submersible heavy transport vessel Black Marlin recently arrived in Nueva Palmira, Uruguay. There, the Black Marlin submerged to offload the world’s largest electric catamaran ferry.

We congratulate the crew of the Black Marlin on a successful transport, thank our client Buquebus and broker deugro for the pleasant collaboration, and wish all future passengers on the Rio de la Plata pleasant trips aboard the China Zorrilla!

𝗕𝗼𝘀𝗸𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗭𝗲𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗻𝗸 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟭
Boskalis has been awarded a contract by Zeevonk, the joint venture between Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, for the transport and offshore installation of the inter-array cable system for the first phase of the Zeevonk Offshore Wind Farm in the Dutch North Sea.

The contract scope includes the transport and installation of approximately 149 kilometers of 66 kV inter-array cables, connecting 69 wind turbines within the offshore wind farm, cable testing and termination activities, as well as the installation of the cable protection systems. The transport of the cable from the manufacturing facility in Eemshaven, the Netherlands, to the wind farm, along with the offshore installation campaign, is planned to be executed using Boskalis’ state-of-the-art cable-laying vessel BOKA Ocean. In addition, survey activities as well as seabed intervention works will be carried out. For the latter, Boskalis will deploy one of its subsea rock installation vessels. Engineering activities are expected to commence shortly, with offshore installation currently planned for 2029.

𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆
In the spring of 2023, our subsea rock installation vessel Rockpiper had the honor of being the first Boskalis vessel to contribute to the development of the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. Now, more than three years later, Ørsted’s offshore wind farm has been inaugurated and is operational. This marks the completion of a major offshore project in which we deployed a total of eight vessels and hundreds of colleagues to help advance Germany’s energy transition.

After our Rockpiper completed the pre-lay scour protection campaign, it was our semi-submersible heavy transport vessel Mighty Servant 1 that made its debut on the project. In Singapore, the vessel loaded the 23,550-ton HVDC converter platform DolWin Epsilon for transport to Norway, where the platform – which converts the wind energy into direct current – was ballasted by specialists from our subsidiary SMIT Salvage. A year later, our cable-laying vessel BOKA Ocean installed dozens of inter-array cables, which were then buried at the correct depth by our Ndurance.

As soon as the bright-yellow DolWin Epsilon platform was commissioned, we sent our powerful oceangoing tug BOKA Sweeper to Norway to tow the platform from the port to the open sea. There, the vessel was assisted by its sister vessel BOKA Keeper for the tow to the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm. Together with the “third sister” BOKA Striker, and our oceangoing tug Princess, Boskalis held the platform in position for its installation on the seabed. This was done by ballasting the platform’s four legs – a task for which our versatile Rockpiper was ideally suited. Using the solid ballast method, a total of 47,500 metric tons of small rocks were pumped into the platform to secure it to the seabed.

We congratulate Ørsted on the inauguration of the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm and thank the crews of all our vessels for their dedication and outstanding work.

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮
Boskalis’ semi-submersible heavy transport vessel White Marlin recently completed another successful transport. This time, the vessel made a voyage between West Africa and South America. Recently, two tugs and Micoperi’s pipe-laying vessel Seminole were loaded in Bonny, Nigeria. The vessel recently arrived with its triple cargo at the port of Bahía Blanca in Argentina.

The transport vessels of Boskalis’ Heavy Marine Transport division are often used to transport a single large, heavy cargo from one location to another. However, sometimes a project requires the transport of multiple (smaller) cargoes with a single voyage. The challenge in such cases lies in the float-on operation, during which the multiple cargoes are positioned above the heavy transport vessel's submerged deck. The subsequent challenge is to keep everything in position whilst the heavy transport vessel refloats before the cargo takes position on the pre-installed cribbing wood.

𝗔 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 ‘𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’
Around the clock, Boskalis’ trailing suction hopper dredgers mobilize and dredge as a matter of course. But recently, our Gateway took it a step further by doing both simultaneously in Mexico. During its mobilization for a new capital dredging project in the port of Ensenada, in northwestern Mexico, ASIPONA Chiapas requested the Gateway to also stop at its port further south for an emergency dredging campaign. As a result, the mobilization and a dredging project in Chiapas coincided perfectly. Call it a ‘dredgilization’...

Over the past few months, a large amount of sand had washed into the access channel to the ‘Puerto Chiapas’ from the Pacific Ocean, threatening the port’s accessibility and causing potential disruptions to the container trade. To prevent this, our Gateway had to dredge the sediment from the access channel and the basin. This campaign has now been successfully completed, and the Gateway has since begun work in Ensenada, where we will be conducting capital dredging in the access channel and turning basin over the coming weeks.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱
Our recently commissioned subsea rock installation vessel Windpiper successfully placed the first rock on its maiden project. The rock is being installed at the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea, developed by Equinor and Polenergia Offshore Wind Poland.

Shortly after the christening ceremony, the Windpiper sailed to Norway to load nearly 45,000 tons of rock – a record cargo. Never before has a single subsea rock installation vessel carried such a large volume of rock on board for one installation project. Using the vessel’s inclined fallpipe, the rock is being installed to protect the export cables running from the offshore wind farm to the Polish mainland.

A wonderful milestone! We thank the project team and crew of the Windpiper for this achievement and wish them every success with the continued ex*****on of this project. We also thank Van Oord for the pleasant collaboration on the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind projects, where together we are supporting the development of Poland's offshore wind sector.
