For the past six years, calculations, drawings and plans have been prepared to reinforce the 30-kilometer-long d**e between the city of Zwolle and the town of Olst in the Netherlands. Starting this year, the Boskalis Nederland project team also began the physical work, with the official kick-off with all stakeholders taking place this week. Over the next eight years, they will be working on the project โ€“ a key component of the Dutch national Flood Protection Program โ€“ using excavators, trucks, shovels, bulldozers and rollers. A large number of these machines are electric and can be charged on-site using battery containers.

A total of approximately 3 million cubic meters of soil will be needed to reinforce the d**e. Much of this material will be extracted from the project area and reused in the new d**e. In addition, sheet piles and vertical sand-proof geotextile (VZG) will be applied to help counteract piping, a failure mechanism in which water flows underneath the d**e and carries sand with it.

Boskalis recently announced its successful first deployment of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) from our new Remote Operations Center (ROC) in Aberdeen. From this onshore center, the colleagues worked directly with our construction support vessel BOKA Northern Ocean, which was working offshore.

Boskalis now also has a second vessel that, thanks to a reliable satellite connection, remains in constant contact with the ROC during project ex*****on: our diving support vessel BOKA Da Vinci. This vessel is primarily used in the North Sea to carry out decommissioning projects that remove outdated infrastructure to make way for renewable energy projects. To ensure smooth collaboration with colleagues at the ROC, the BOKA Da Vinci is equipped with two new ROVs and related systems, enabling 24-hour remote assistance from Aberdeen.

The ROC significantly expands Boskalisโ€™ remote operating capabilities by enabling critical subsea tasks to be supported and controlled from shore. The center provides a central hub for fleet operations, offers additional on-demand expertise to support offshore crews and is designed to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen safety and ensure consistent delivery across projects.

When maintaining a port or waterway, the dredged material โ€“ sand, clay, or silt โ€“ is often transported to a designated location outside the port area. In some cases, however, the dredged material can be given a second life nearby. This is the case in Harwich, United Kingdom. During port maintenance using our trailing suction hopper dredger Sospan Dau, the dredged material was used to improve the salt marshes in Copperas Bay by increasing the height of the salt marsh in strategic locations.

Salt marshes are among the most valuable coastal habitats. They provide a home for wildlife, absorb carbon, and act as a natural buffer against erosion and flooding. Yet around the coast, these vital habitats are under increasing pressure. Through the Beneficial Use of Dredging (BUDS) project, Boskalis and our client, Harwich Haven Authority, are taking material from essential maintenance dredging operations and putting it to positive use โ€“ helping to protect and strengthen vulnerable salt marsh habitat for the future.

This groundbreaking project may be the first of many similar nature restoration projects in the United Kingdom. With an eye towards these future developments, various methods have been tested here to restore the eroded salt marsh, such as a brush wood retaining structures and coir roll bunds. In this way, the project serves not only as a direct nature restoration effort but also as a learning experience for all parties involved, allowing the methods used to be further refined for future sites.

Boskalis has recently completed another unique transport. Using our semi-submersible heavy transport vessels White Marlin and Blue Marlin, we carried out two identical operations. The sister vessels made the same voyage from Qingdao, China, to Freeport, Bahamas with the same cargo. This remarkable โ€œtwin transportโ€ was undertaken for the delivery of the Lucayan, a mega dry dock built by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipyard for Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited Measuring 413 meters in length and 85 meters in width, the dry dock was simply too large to be transported in one piece. To enable the voyage, the brand-new dry dock was divided into four sections.

Both our White Marlin and Blue Marlin transported one dry dock section of more than 156 meters long, with an additional smaller section placed on top of it. Now that all four sections have been safely discharged, they will be assembled into a single floating dry dock. Once operational, Lucayan will be one of the largest floating dry docks in the world, with a lifting capacity of 130,000 tons.

We thank the crews of the White Marlin and Blue Marlin for their dedication, and our client GBSY & Seabridge for their trust and pleasant cooperation throughout this exceptional twin transport by our sister vessels.

Boskalis Westminster Ltd., as part of the VBA joint venture with VolkerStevin and AtkinsRรฉalis, has been awarded a framework agreement for beach management across England. Under this agreement with the Environment Agency the joint venture will focus on beach management, coastal protection and flood-risk reduction for the coming 6 years.

The framework forms a central part of the Environment Agencyโ€™s longโ€‘term strategy to protect Englandโ€™s coastline from the growing impacts of climate change, seaโ€‘level rise and extreme weather. Over the past century, Boskalis Westminster has completed countless coastal protection projects in the United Kingdom, playing a critical role in safeguarding homes, businesses, transport links and vital infrastructure in some of the countryโ€™s most exposed coastal locations.

Before subsea power cables can be installed to connect offshore wind turbine generators (WTGs) to each other enabling the transmission of renewable energy to the shore, the seabed must first be inspected to ensure it is safe to work. Our colleagues at Boskalis Hirdes EOD Services are specialists in this field and have in recent months carried out an extensive unexploded ordnance (UXO) identification and clearance campaign at the Gennaker offshore wind farm (OWF) using their dedicated support vessel Kamara.

With 63 WTGs and a generation capacity of 976.5 MW, adequate to provide green electricity to around 1 million households, the Gennaker OWF will be the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. Given the scale and size of the Gennaker OWF, the area to be inspected by the Kamara was substantial. In total, more than 1,250 objects were investigated, of which only one was confirmed to be a UXO. In close consultation with the explosive ordnance disposal service (Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst) of Mecklenburg West Pomerania, the UXO was safely taken care of.

This has cleared the path for the future submarine cable installation works, which will be carried out next year by our specialized cable lay vessel BOKA Ocean. In the meantime, the 130 kilometers of inner array grid cable will be manufactured in the Netherlands by our consortium partner TKF Subsea Solutions B.V.

With our construction support vessel BOKA Falcon - one of the strongest in the world, along with its sister vessel BOKA Fulmar - Boskalis worked in the Polish Baltic Sea for nearly a year. The BOKA Falcon dug the trench for the future export and array cables installation using two different teams and also cleared the planned cable route of any boulders.

With a bollard pull of over 400 tons, the BOKA Falcon first did this with the T-Rex plough and, in recent months, with the Megalodon plough. Both ploughs were deployed for both the inter-array cable route in ร˜rstedโ€™s future 1.5 MW Baltica 2 offshore wind farm and the more than 260-kilometer export cable scope for four cables from the offshore substations to the Polish coast. A cable corridor of more than 400 kilometers. That is as long as a straight line between the northernmost and southernmost points of the Danish mainland.

However, the BOKA Falconโ€™s heavy-duty work was just the beginning of the major Baltica 2 project that Boskalis will be carrying out. With our cable-laying vessels BOKA Ocean and Ndurance, Boskalis will return to the Baltic Sea to install the inter-array cables (BOKA Ocean) and the export cables (Ndurance).

We would like to thank the crew of the BOKA Falcon and the project team for their dedication during this project, and we thank ร˜rsted for the pleasant collaboration so far and looking forward to the next stage in the development of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm.

When a vessel gets into distress, it usually happens offshore, so damage to a historic building on land is not the first thing that comes to mind. In the case of the grounding of the 80-meter-long Defiant, however, things were different. During a storm, the tank barge ran aground on a reef adjacent to the centuries-old Castillo San Felipe del Morro fort in Puerto Rico.

A salvage team from our American Salvage Marine Fire Fighting (SMFF) provider Donjon-Smit, which was joined by our colleagues from SMIT Salvage in the Netherlands, was mobilized to remove the oil from the Defiant and refloat the vessel. Despite its hard-to-reach location, the team succeeded within a few days, preventing large-scale environmental pollution from an oil spill.

Boskalis has mobilized an impressive dredging spread to Harwich Haven in the United Kingdom. The trailing suction hopper dredgers Shoalway and Strandway are currently working alongside our backhoe dredger Magnor to dredge one of the berths for large container vessels to the required depth. This is a major priority for the Port of Felixstowe, ensuring that these giant vessels can continue to load and discharge their cargo.

The Magnor is being assisted by our two pusher tugs Union Onyx and Union Topaz, which in turn are transporting the Terraferre barges 501 and 502 to and from the disposal area carrying dredged material. The dredging vessels will work intensively together for one week to bring the area in front of the berth to the required depth. After that, the Strandway will return to Rotterdam, and the Shoalway will carry out regular maintenance dredging work in the Haven. The dredger and associated vessels and barges will remain active for a while longer to dredge the remaining slope further south of the berth, which has less effect on vessels berthing at the berth, to the correct design specifications.

Nine out of ten of our ocean towage operations are international. Just think of the many FPSOs that are transported each year from Asia to the Middle East, Norway, Brazil or Australia. Recently, however, our ocean-going tug Bear carried out a different kind of transport for the jack-up rig Grannus: a โ€™domestic towโ€™ from the port of Rotterdam to Eemshaven, both located in the Netherlands. The Bear performed this tow as the lead tug, together with a second, smaller tug from a partner.

This operation once again highlights the Bearโ€™s versatility. In recent years, the vessel has carried out numerous towage operations, and has also contributed to the development of offshore wind farms and to salvage operations by Boskalisโ€™ subsidiary SMIT Salvage.
