Behind the growth of AI is a growing need for infrastructure and skilled welders are part of that picture.

In Texas, Leister Senior Applications Specialist Matt Davis is helping train professionals to weld CPVC and PVC piping used in ventilation and cooling systems for AI-related facilities.

Together with the University of Texas at Austin, SemiCon, and HIPCO Houston, Leister developed a training program that combines technical instruction with hands-on practice using the Weldplast 300, Triac AT, and Hot Jet S.

The response shows how relevant this expertise has become: Matt has already led three training classes and certified close to 50 students in plastic welding.

“The initial class was very well organized, and participants immediately signed up for two additional classes.”

For participants, the training builds practical skills for applications where precise and reliable plastic welding supports the infrastructure behind today’s growing AI market.

From Granules to Everyday Hero

In the particle foam industry, it all starts with small, hard plastic beads – mostly made of EPS (expanded polystyrene) or EPP (expanded polypropylene). They only reach their full potential through targeted pre-foaming. The beads expand, becoming light, stable, and heat-insulating. They are then welded together in molds to form finished components. This is how products are created that we use every day, often without consciously noticing them.

The foamed beads are used to create, among other things, protective packaging for electronics and household appliances, helmet inner shells for bicycle and protective helmets, vehicle parts such as seat cores or energy absorbers, and insulation panels for buildings.
