Research Spotlight | World Spinal Cord Injury Day

Today, on World Spinal Cord Injury Day, we recognize the importance of rehabilitation in helping people regain mobility, function and independence after spinal cord injury.

While rehabilitation is always tailored to the individual, the unique properties of water—buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and resistance—provide a safe environment to improve movement, reduce joint loading and build confidence during therapy.

Our latest Knowledge Centre features recent research on aquatic rehabilitation for spinal disorders:

In 2013, Joep de Graaf walked in as a graduation intern. He never left. This week we celebrated 12.5 years of him on the team — with cake.

Thirteen years in one sentence: he builds relationships that outlast the projects they started with.

2013. Joep joins as a graduation intern, finishing his bachelor.
2014–2016. He stays. Sales support, then sales executive with service and maintenance alongside it. After a reorganisation, Joep and Eric take on sales for the entire world together — and grow the business faster than anyone expected.
2017–2021. Promoted to sales manager at 26, Joep flies to the other side of the world on his own for the first time, to visit our distributors and see their projects on site. Over the following years he spends months in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, growing the business there. Many of the relationships he built then are still with us today.
2022–2023. Joins the management team, and becomes Head of Global Sales — while starting his Executive MBA at Rotterdam School of Management alongside the role.
2024. Graduates for the second time: Executive MBA completed.
2025–2026. The partnership with Myrtha Pools, which Joep guided from a first phone call all the way to signature, takes real shape — and leads to the founding of EWAC Pools this year.

What we value most is how he works. Relationships with distributors and therapists that last for years rather than deals that close in a quarter, and the patience to guide a project from a first conversation to the day a pool is put into use.

There's one more thing in the pipeline, too: the digital solution born from his MBA thesis, which we've been building with a partner since 2025 and which is now in its final phase before launch. More on that in the coming weeks.

Congratulations, Joep. On to the next 12.5 years!

A new great rehabilitation facility is taking shape in Ancona, Italy.

Last week our team reached an important milestone at the Pacinotti Life Project, where we're creating a hydrotherapy environment built for recovery and long-term care.

At the heart of the installation is a movable pool floor of nearly 2.7 x 5.6 meters. It lets the facility change water depth at the touch of a button — so the same pool can support a child taking their first steps in the water, an athlete rebuilding strength, and a patient recovering after surgery. One space, adapting to whoever needs it.

Projects like this are never the work of one team. Our thanks go to Massimo and everyone at Corsetti Piscine for the close cooperation, and to Maarten and Luuk, who led the installation on site last week.

There's still plenty of work ahead before the doors open, but the facility is really coming to life. The grand opening is planned for the end of September!

Successful RenovAction® maintenance completed in Kamperland

We’re pleased to share the successful completion of maintenance works at Vakantiepark De Molenhoek in Kamperland, the Netherlands.

The pools, originally renovated using RenovAction® technology, have now undergone scheduled maintenance to ensure they remain in excellent condition for many years to come.

After the dewatering system was installed and the pools had been emptied and thoroughly cleaned, the maintenance works started. During the project, the client already had new PVC coping available for the toddler pools, which we replaced at the same time. After seeing the result, they immediately decided to order and replace the coping for the main pool as well.

Thanks to excellent weather conditions, the work was completed in approximately half of the planned time.

The result speaks for itself: pools that look as good as new and are ready to welcome visitors for the new season.

A great example of how preventive maintenance helps maximize the lifespan, appearance, and performance of RenovAction® pools.

Can aquatic therapy improve balance after an incomplete spinal cord injury?

A new randomized controlled trial by Menchero Sánchez-Cifuentes (2025) demonstrates that adding aquatic physiotherapy to conventional rehabilitation significantly improves balance in people with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI), supporting the value of early aquatic rehabilitation.

An interesting aspect of this study is that the researchers used the EWAC Medical Aquatic Obstacle Course Set. The obstacle course enabled participants to safely practise stepping, obstacle negotiation, weight shifting and functional mobility in a supportive aquatic environment.

It's encouraging to see scientific research demonstrating how evidence-based aquatic rehabilitation, combined with purpose-designed equipment, can contribute to better outcomes for people with neurological conditions.

A day away from the office 🌞🐄

Last week, we swapped hydrotherapy pools for the Dutch countryside during our annual EWAC Medical team outing.

Surrounded by the unmistakable sights and smells of a traditional Dutch farm, we spent the afternoon enjoying a variety of classic Dutch games. From fierljeppen to blindfolded wheelbarrow races, there was plenty of healthy competition and laughter. With colleagues of all ages taking part, everyone got involved.

Armed with a wheelbarrow filled with food and drinks, and with bitterballen as a well-earned snack along the way, we completed the course under a beautiful Dutch summer sun.

We wrapped up the day with a lovely dinner in Alkmaar.

A fantastic day full of enthusiasm, teamwork, humour and, above all, a lot of fun. Moments like these remind us that a strong team is built not only through working together, but also by enjoying time together.

Thanks everyone for making it such a great day!

Something exciting is taking shape at EWAC Medical.

We're currently engineering and building one of our most ambitious aquatic therapy projects to date: a complete high-performance hydrotherapy facility designed for elite-level rehabilitation and training.
The scope brings together multiple modular stainless steel pools, a movable pool floor with an integrated underwater treadill, a counter-current system, hot and cold plunge pools, and fully integrated water treatment — all pre-assembled and tested at our production plant in the Netherlands before shipment.

A special word of thanks to Darren Booth, Project Director at Arena Events + Venues, whose close collaboration from the very first stages through to order has been instrumental in making this project happen. It's been a real pleasure working side by side to get this right. This project is delivered together with our distributor Al Faisaliah Medical Systems (FMS), and we look forward to the road ahead.
The render offers a first glimpse of what's coming. More to follow soon.
