Several small gas leaks had developed in the rear plate of a metal enclosure around a storage tankโ€™s fl**ge connection. Beneath the insulation, parts of the damaged area were difficult to reach.

Before a repair could begin, the team needed to expose the damage and prepare the metal surface. Working in an ATEX zone made the choice of tools particularly important.

Using the Allmet A-0155 Surface Grinder with the A-0500 Grinding Disc, the team carried out the surface preparation using a cold work method and within the siteโ€™s safety requirements.

The prepared area was then repaired with Belzona 1511 and reinforced with Belzona SuperWrap II.

โœ… Surface preparation and repair completed during a one-day shutdown.
โœ… No further leakage observed following the repair.
โœ… Insulation reinstated.

The grinding itself might take twenty minutes. Getting the area ready, arranging a hot work permit and coordinating nearby activities can take considerably longer.

That is where a suitable cold work method can make a practical difference.

Not every surface preparation job requires the same setup. A small local repair calls for a different approach than removing rust or old coatings across a much larger steel surface.

The Tercoo Single is the most compact option and is especially useful for smaller areas, edges, welds and other locations where control and accessibility are important. It is a practical choice for local corrosion removal and smaller repair zones.

The Tercoo Double gives you more working width while still remaining easy to handle. It is well suited to medium-sized areas and recurring maintenance work, and can be used on surfaces up to approximately 10 mยฒ.

For larger areas, the Tercoo Triple offers even more coverage. With three discs working at the same time, it is intended for jobs up to around 30 mยฒ where efficiency becomes increasingly important, without immediately moving to a larger machine setup.

The Tercoo Multi 8-Pack takes things a step further. With eight discs working side by side, it is designed for larger-scale and more professional surface preparation jobs above approximately 30 mยฒ. Unlike the Single, Double and Triple, which are used with a suitable drill, the Multi works with a specially adapted polishing machine.

Each Tercoo configuration has its own place, depending on the surface, accessibility and scale of the work. The principle stays the same: removing rust and coatings while preparing the steel for the next step.

Out of five nominees for the ION Borghardt Award 2026, we took third place with Pinovo. A result weโ€™re very happy with!

Above all, weโ€™re grateful for the opportunity to share our story with the audience: how closed-loop, on-site vacuum blasting can support safe maintenance, including when removing coatings containing hazardous substances such as chromium-6.

By extracting the abrasive and removed coating directly at the source, we help limit the spread of dust. Reusable abrasive is separated and recirculated, reducing waste and the need for fresh abrasive.

And as Pinovo puts it: PaintIsPlastic. Where removed paint ends up matters. By collecting the removed coating within the closed system, it helps keep paint particles out of harbour waters, waterways beneath bridges and drains. A practical way to bring safety and circularity together on site.

Off to Gorinchem for the ION Borghardt Award ๐Ÿ†

A few weeks ago, we shared that Perspect Industrial Products was nominated for the ION Borghardt Award 2026 with Pinovo vacuum blasting technology for the controlled removal of Chromium(VI)-containing coatings.

And today, weโ€™re heading to Gorinchem, where the nominees will present their innovations and the award will be presented later this afternoon.

The ION Borghardt Award puts new developments in the Dutch surface treatment industry in the spotlight, with this yearโ€™s focus on sustainability and circularity.

To give a bit of extra context: our nomination is about a challenge we have been working on for some time: removing Chromium(VI)-containing coatings in a controlled way. With Pinovo, blasting takes place in a closed-loop system, capturing dust and contaminants at the source while preparing the steel for recoating.

In the run-up to today, we also had the chance to share more about this application in the OT E-magazine. A nice opportunity to explain the technology and share some of what we have learned from using it in practice.

And today gives us another chance to do just that. Weโ€™re looking forward to meeting others from the industry, hearing what they have been working on and sharing some of our own experiences.

Introducing the electric PiSys Mini, a compact addition to Pinovoโ€™s range of closed-loop vacuum blasting systems.

Equipped with an electric vacuum unit, this version requires just 2โ€“3 Nmยณ/min of compressed air at 8 bar, compared with 10 Nmยณ/min for the fully pneumatic version. This makes it a practical option where compressed air capacity is limited.

The PiSys Mini combines blasting and extraction in one closed-loop process. Coating debris and dust are captured directly at the tool, while reusable abrasive is separated and returned to the system.

Its compact design makes transport and positioning easier, bringing more flexibility to surface preparation for maintenance and recoating.

The electric PiSys Mini is intended for use outside ATEX zones and still requires compressed air for blasting.

A look back at the Bรธmlo Bridge in Norway, where KTV Group used Pinovo while working on the bridgeโ€™s suspension rods with rope access. The team removed old coating and corrosion ahead of a new protective system. During blasting, the Pinovo system collected the blasting media and coating debris at the work area, helping keep them out of the water below.

A good example of why collection at the source matters when access is difficult and the environment is directly beneath the work.

Limited access, uneven surfaces, dust restrictions or an explosive atmosphere: the conditions around a repair can make surface preparation a challenge.

Different methods offer different possibilities:

Rotating carbide-tipped discs remove rust and coatings while creating a roughened surface. A practical option where setting up conventional blasting equipment is difficult, without the need for loose blasting abrasive.

ATEX-certified is a good start, but it does not tell you everything you need to know.

The first question is always:

Which ATEX zone will the tool be used in?

But that is not the only question we ask.

We also want to know what kind of work needs to be done, what material is being worked on, what equipment will be used together and under which conditions the job will take place.

Because โ€œwe need ATEX toolsโ€ is not quite enough information to select the right solution.

Different zones and different applications require different equipment.

That is why we prefer to look at the complete situation first, before recommending a tool.
