PERMANENT PACKER

A permanent packer is a packer when set inside a production well, cannot be retrieve intact, but the only method of retrieval is by milling the packer component.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A PERMANAT PACKER

1.PAMERNENTLY SET
A permanent packer once set, can only be retrieve from the well through milling. A milling tool is required to carry out this task. The process involves milling the packer slip, by this process destroying them. The packer may then be pushed to the well’s bottom or retrieve to the surface.
2. WEIGHT ON TENSION NOT REQUIRED
To keep the packer in set position, no tubing weight or tension is required on a permanent packer.

3. HIGH PRESSURE RATING
Due to the simple design of a permanent packer and its fewer components. Permanent packer can be design and built to have a high pressure capacity rating than other types of packer.

4.ECONOMICAL
The cost of producing a permanent packer is way less, compare to other packer of comparable size and composition. This is as a result of its fewer components and simplified design structure.

5. HIGH TEMPERATURE RATING
The permanent packer is design in such a way that it can be able to withstand high temperature in excess of 5000F.

6. POPULAR/ MOSTLY USED
The permanent packer is of all the most frequently used. This is due to variety of factors, such as cost, high pressure and temperature capacity,etc.

OPERATION PRINCIPLES OF A RETRIEVABLE PACKER
A retrievable packer setting mechanism have the following, a J-latch, a shear pin, or a clutch arrangement that allows the packer to be engaged. These mechanisms can be actuated by different method based on the condition of the wellbore, and the operation anticipated during its stay in the well, these are upward or downward movement, placing weight on the packer, pulling tension on the tubing, or rotating to the left or right. For hydraulically actuated retrievable packer, the inside tubing may use pump-out plugs, wireline plugs, or flow-out balls.

For the retrievable packer to be retrieve, its mechanism would involve another range actuation method, which could be, straight pickup, rotating to the right or left, slacking off and picking up, or picking up to shear pins.

CLASSIFICATION OF PACKER

Parker can be classified according to the permanency in the well. It could be permanent or retrievable. The retrievable packer can be retrieve after its operation, by manipulating, by permitting a reversal of the setting. For the permanent packer, It remains in the hole, but it can be retrieve from the hole, the unsettling process is more complicated, as this is not the reverse of the setting process.

RETRIEVABLE PACKER
A retrievable packer is a subsurface tool used in completion operation which serves as a seal between the tubing and casing. After operation it can be set and retrieve with wireline, wireline or hydraulic mechanism.

APPLICATION OF RETRIEVABLE PACKER
1. For a short life completion operation
2. Where the operations would likely lead to a workover, that might require fullbore access.
3. Cement squeeze
4. Casing leak detection

PRODUCTION PACKER
Production packer is a device that isolates and control the production of fluids & pressure to protect casing and formation from above and below producing zone. A production packer will attain all or the following objectives when on an ideal function.
1. Isolate well fluid and pressure
2. Keep gas mixed with liquid, by using the gas energy a natural flow
3. Separate producing zone, by preventing contamination of fluid and pressure.
4. Aid in formation of annular volume (tubing/casing/packer) to enable gas lift or hydraulic subsurface pumping system.
5. Limit well control to the tubing at the surface for safety purpose.
6. It holds well servicing fluid (Kill fluid, Packer fluid) in the casing annulus.
Once a tubing packer system has been selected, design and installed. There are four mode of operations, shut in, producing, injection and treatment. These operational modes with their respective temperature & pressure profiles have considerable impact on the length and force changes on tubing – to packer connection.
