Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 13

🚨 Distance Protection Design: From Theory to Hands-On Reality 🚨

Today’s training wasn’t just about knowing distance protection.
It was about designing it. Configuring it. Owning it.

We started with the concept, that is, why distance protection is a game changer for transmission line security.
Then we went deep into the four-stepped distance protection scheme, breaking it down zone by zone.

💡 The highlight?
A practical, hands-on exercise which entails designing a complete 132 kV, 70 km transmission line distance protection scheme using the Schneider Electric MiCOM P441 Relay.
Every CT and VT setting was calculated.
Every pickup value for Zones 1, 2, 3, and 4 entered with precision.
Every relay logic and zone status was fine-tuned for maximum reliability.

We even simulated the fault location to pinpoint where trouble strikes, because in protection, seconds matter.

Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 12

🚀 From Theory to Hands-on Mastery: Siemens 7SJ804 with DIGSI 4 🚀

Today, we went deep into the world of Siemens SIPROTEC protection, not just learning the concepts, but getting our hands dirty with real-life configuration steps that power engineers face every day.

Here’s what we tackled:
⚡ DIGSI 4 Mastery – Understanding the interface, workflow, and creating fresh setting files.
⚡ Extracting settings from an existing relay (because not everything starts from scratch).
⚡ Inserting the right SIPROTEC device and selecting the exact relay model for the job.
⚡ System fundamentals – Rated frequency, phase sequence, CT star point, VT connection, symmetry assumptions.
⚡ CT & VT ratings, breaker settings, and binary input thresholds.
⚡ Overcurrent & Earth fault protection – Instantaneous (50/51), Time Overcurrent, Earth Fault pickup, time dial, curves, drop-out characteristics.
⚡ Measurement supervision & metering resolution – so your readings mean something.
⚡ Masking I/O configuration – binary inputs, outputs, LEDs, buffer settings.
⚡ CFC logic programming – making your relay think the way you want it to.

By the end of the session, DIGSI 4 wasn’t just “software”, it became a control center for precision, protection, and performance.

Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 11

🔍 Mastering Transformer Differential Protection with ABB RET 541

Today’s training was 🔥
We broke down one of the most critical protection schemes in power systems: Differential Protection of Transformers.

We didn’t just talk theory!!!
We used ETAP for design and simulation, then configured the ABB RET 541 relay step-by-step:

⚡ Understanding the concept of differential protection
⚡ Knowing the exact requirements for applying it effectively
⚡ Sizing CTs for both HV & LV windings
⚡ Calculating CT secondary currents at full load and during LV 3-phase faults
⚡ Working through differential current & restraint current calculations
⚡ Determining relay operating criteria
⚡ Configuring slope settings, starting ratios, and basic settings
⚡ Setting turn point 2 and enabling 2nd harmonic blocking to avoid false trips
⚡ Fine-tuning instantaneous protection

By the end, participants could confidently design, simulate, and configure transformer differential protection, from first principles in ETAP to final ABB RET 541 relay upload.

Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 10

ABB 615 Relay!!!
We Took It From “Fresh Out of the Box” to Fully Facility-Ready ⚡

Today’s session wasn’t just another relay lecture…
We got our hands dirty.
We went from zero to a fully configured ABB 615 Relay, and every setting had a reason.

Here’s what we worked through step-by-step:

✅ How to get ABB PCM600 software (and avoid the usual download headaches)
✅ How to get device drivers that actually work
✅ Creating a new settings file from scratch
✅ IED configuration — so the relay knows exactly what you want
✅ Setting up CT & VT analog inputs for both phase and earth fault
✅ Fine-tuning Time Over-Current Protection (start values, multipliers, curve types, reset types)
✅ Configuring instantaneous protection for lightning-fast trips
✅ Dialing in earth fault protection settings
✅ Setting up trip logics in output settings so the breaker acts as at when required

And yes, all the settings came directly from ETAP calculations, so this wasn’t guesswork.

By the end, this relay was ready for real-world protection, not just a lab demo.

Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 9

🚨 Today was all about mastering the SEL 751 Relay, one of the most versatile protection relays in the field.

Every parameter designed using ETAP Software was brought to life on the relay today!

We went deep, and I mean deep. Here’s what we covered:

✅ Overview & Application – Why the SEL 751 exists and where it shines.
✅ Software Interface & Communication Protocols – Speaking the relay’s language.
✅ Access Levels & Passwords – Security first.
✅ Creating Setting Files – From scratch to ready-to-upload.
✅ Relay Part Numbers – And what every digit tells you.
✅ Global Settings – Frequency, fault conditions, and SELogic mastery.
✅ Group Settings Configuration – Organizing protection profiles like a pro.
✅ CT & PT Settings – Getting ratios right, every time.
✅ Line Parameters & Fault Locator – Pinpointing issues with precision.
✅ Over-Current Protection – Phase TOC, Instantaneous, Residual TOC — with pickup, curves, time dials, and torque control properly setup.
✅ Trip & Close Logic Settings – Turning logic into action.
✅ Front Panel Configuration – Targets, alarms, operational LEDs.
✅ Uploading Settings – From laptop to relay, flawlessly.
✅ Disturbance/Fault Records – Reading and Interpreting the waveforms.

By the end of the session, participants weren’t just using the SEL 751, they were commanding it.

💡 The Workflow That Works:
1️⃣ Simulate & calculate in ETAP
2️⃣ Configure in the SEL 751
3️⃣ Protect with confidence

If you’ve ever had to coordinate relays in the real world, you know how much every setting matters.

Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 8

🚨 WE DON’T JUST CLICK AROUND IN ETAP. WE ENGINEER. ⚡

Today’s session was pure, applied protection logic. The kind that saves equipment, prevents downtime, and makes you the person everyone calls when things go wrong.

Here’s what we nailed:

⚡ Transformer Phase Protection – shield the crown jewel of your system
⚡ Relay Coordination with Downstream – zero false trips, full selectivity
⚡ Earth Fault Protection – motors, cables, transformers (no exceptions)
⚡ Instantaneous Protection – when milliseconds matter

We didn’t just talk settings. We broke down why they matter, how to apply them, and what happens when you mess them up.

If you can design protection in ETAP that works in the field, you’re not just “good with software”, you’re dangerously valuable.

Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 7

🚨 WE TOOK MiCOM P122 FROM ZERO TO FIELD-READY. ⚡

Today’s session wasn’t about reading manuals.
It was about owning the relay, wiring it, talking to it, and making it do exactly what you want.

Here’s what we nailed:

⚡ Wired & configured the MiCOM P122 like it was ours
⚡ Mastered MiCOM Studio 1 — no more guessing menus
⚡ Set up communication protocols that actually connect
⚡ Built a relay settings file from scratch
⚡ Pulled parameters straight from ETAP into the relay: Overcurrent, Instantaneous, Earth-fault, Curves, CT Ratios & more
⚡ Customized alarm indicators so the relay speaks your language
⚡ Solved real-world config headaches before they cause downtime
⚡ Uploaded settings - and saw them work, live

This is hands-on protection engineering, where ETAP meets hardware, and you stop being “just a software guy” and become a field-ready problem solver.

Advanced Training on Power System Protection: Day 6

Today’s session was a deep, surgical dive into real-world protection engineering.

Here’s what we unpacked, no theory dumps, just field-ready knowledge:

⚙️ Relay settings for 3 motors in parallel
⚙️ Practical relay coordination: timing that actually works
⚙️ Grading margins (aka Coordination Time Intervals)
⚙️ Time dial calculations: precise, not approximate
⚙️ Relay type & curve selection: based on load behavior
⚙️ Directional overcurrent protection: when and why you deploy it
⚙️ Cable protection: because your weakest link can trip your whole system

This was more than training.
It was applied protection logic, the kind that prevents downtime, saves gear, and proves you know what you’re doing.

🔥 If you’re an engineer who wants to design like a leader, not just tick boxes, comment “RELAY READY” or send a DM.
