WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 11kV AND 33kV FEEDERS.

✍️ Every transformer is connected to a feeder.

✍️ Feeders are of two types:

(i) 11kV and
(ii)33kV feeders.

✍️Both Feeders are owned by the DisCos.

✍️11kV feeders originate and are controlled by DisCos.

✍️ 33kV feeders has its originate from the Transmission Company of Nigeria(TCN).

✍️ 33kV Feeder carries a significant amount of power: about 20MW

✍️ 11kV Feeder carries less power: about 5MW

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE AND THREE-PHASE PREPAID METER.

1. A single-phase meter cost about 90k while three-phase goes for about 155k.

2. Single-phase meter is used for household appliances such as refrigerators, TVs, lighting bulbs, electric stoves, washing machines, etc

3. Three-phase meter is used for industrial appliances such as industrial refrigerators, dryers, ovens, grinding machines, washing machines, etc.

4. A single-phase meter can simultaneously support 2 ACs, 1 electric cooker, 1 microwave, 1 washing machine, 1 water heater, and other Smaller appliances such as TVs, radios, and fans.

5. A three-phase meter can support double what a single-phase meter can carry.

6. A single-phase meter can handle up to 60Amperes of current or a total load of up to 13kW of power.

7. Three-phase meter can handle up to 90 Amperes of current or a load of up to 20kW of power.

8. Single-phase meter has two wires from the electric pole that connect to it.

9. Three-phase meter has four wires from the electric pole into it.

MY PREPAID METER IS BAD: WILL I GET A REPLACEMENT AT NO COST?

Every prepaid meter has two sides:

the side that connects the meter to the pole and the other side that connects your house to the meter.

These sides are called the INCOMER & OUTGOING sides respectively.

Whatever happens at the INCOMER'S Side(the pole to the meter) is the responsibility of the DisCo.

And whatever happens at the OUTGOING side( from the meter to the house) is the customers' responsibility.

When a meter is bad, a metering Engineer comes to ascertain the cause.

If the fault was on the OUTGOING side of the meter, it means the customer was responsible and would have to bear the cost for a replacement. 😔😔😔

Two things a customer will do that can lead to a bad prepaid meter:

1. Having appliances above the normal capacity of the meter.

Every meter has its capacity.
A single-phase meter has a capacity of about 60 Amperes while a three-phase meter has about 100 Amperes.

If a single-phase meter is installed for you and, you go about sharing the meter with other tenants, the capacity of the meter will probably be exceeded and can cause damage.

2. Having no Distribution Box(DB) or ineffective DB.

If an electrical fault occurs in your room, it has the tendency to draw an enormous amount of current into the room. But if you have a functional DB with Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB), the MCB will stop the enormous fault current from getting to the prepaid meter and destroying it.

Unfortunately, most homes don't have good DBs so when an electrical fault happens in their rooms, it destroys the Prepaid meter.

AVOID USING EXTENSION WITH THESE EIGHT (8) APPLIANCES.

In order to prevent possible fire outbreak as a result of extension overload, these 8 electrical appliances should be plugged directly to the wall sockets rather than an extension.
These appliances are:

1. Freezer.
2. Electric cooker.
3. Microwave.
4. Electric iron.
5. Bread toaster.
6. Air Conditioner (AC)
7. Electric Water heater.
8. Power blender.

HOW ELECTRICITY GRID COLLAPSE CAN BE PREVENTED.

Grid collapse is caused by an inbalance between power generated and power consumed.

Here are three(3) things we must do to avert electricity grid collapse.

1. Spinning reserve.

Spinning reserves are special generators whose output are connected to the grid only during emergency.
Emergency such as a sudden increase in power demand or a sudden shortage in power generated. These spinning reserve generators are standby generators.
In our system, we need a spinning reserve of about 400MW

2. All generators should run on FREE GOVERNOR.

We have 27 generators working simultaneously to generate the 4,000MW that is distributed. If these generators are made to run on free governor, their output power will automatically vary to meet load demand. So in the case of a sudden increase in power demand, these generators will automatically ramp up(increase) their output power. Conversly, if demand for power drops, the free governor system will automatically reduce the power generated.
This free governor system can be likened to the Automatic Voltage Regulator(AVR) in our stabilizers that ensures that the output voltage remains 220V irrespective of the input voltage.

3. Full implementation of SCADA system on 330 and 132kV buses.

Supervisory, Control And Data Acquisition system(SCADA) is a technological advanced way used in maintaining the balance between power generated and power consumed.
For a grid as large as ours, manually trying to maintain this balance is grossly inefficient.

11 & 33kV FEEDERS; What are they all about?

Part 1.

Distribution transformers don't generate power. They get their power from high-tension wires.

The high-tension wires are called FEEDERS.

Feeders are of two(2) types:

i. 33kV feeder
ii. 11kV feeder

But the voltages from these feeders have to be stepped down by a transformer to a lower voltage level suitable for household appliances.

A transformer connected to a 33kV feeder can be called a 33/0.415 kV transformer. And not 33kVA transformer.

A transformer connected to an 11kV feeder can be called an 11/0.415 kV transformer. And not 11 KVA transformer.

All 33kV feeders have their origin in a transmission power sub-station and are intended to terminate(end) in DisCo's power sub-station. DisCos power sub-stations are called INJECTION SUB-STATION.

Injection Substations receive power from 33 kV feeders and step it down to 11 kV.

All 11kV feeders originates from DisCo's power injection sub-station and is intended to give power to all the 11/0.415 kV transformers in our streets.

According to the laid down law and regulation, NO STREET TRANSFORMER SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO THE 33 kV FEEDER.
Except in two(2) cases:

1. There is no 11kV feeders around that area.
2. You are an industrial user. That is, you have an industry.

FIVE SMART WAYS TO MANAGE ELECTRICITY UNIT(S)

1. Use energy efficient appliances. Appliances with the A+++ ratings are energy efficient and consume's less energy.

2. Your room is not a club house. Try and be reducing the volume of your sound system.
The lower the volume, the lower the energy consumption.

3. Don't drop hot/warm food in your freezer.
Allow it to cool down naturally first.
The more hot food you freeze, the more units will be going.

4. The brightness of your TV set affects it's energy consumption. The brighter it is, the more energy it will consume.

5. Turn off any appliances that is not in use.

WHICH TARIFF BAND I DEY SELF?

By now, I believe every electricity consumer should have heard about the five(5) classes of Bands: A, B, C, D, & E.

These Bands are classified based on the availability of power with Band A having the most and Band E having the least power availability.

Some Nigerians have humorously remarked that their Band is not among the five listed bands.

Some have said their Band has been "aBANDoned" while other have sworn their band is a "BANDit" that has held them bound. 😃😃

It appears Band A customers have no issues in knowing their Band. The reason is obvious.

But what about the other Bandits?
Sorry, Bands?

How I fit know my Band?

1. If you are an un-metered(estimated billing) electricity customer, just look at your monthly electricity bill slip.

The slip contains information such as your Band, tariff cost, estimated energy consumed for that month, arrears, feeder name, etc.

2. If you are metered, to find out your Band, go the the website of your DisCo. Click on any link that would lead you to vend(recharge). Input your meter number, and you will see your band.

If that doesn't work, physically go to the nearest Business unit of your disco and ask them.

Please, like, share and comment to create awareness🙏🙏🙏🙏

1. Reduce the volume of sound systems. The higher the volume, the more energy is used up.

2. Don't leave TVs, Decoders, and electronics on stand-by/ idle mode. They consume energy on that mode.

3. Completely defrost soup before warming.

4. Minimize the brightness of your TV screen. The higher the brightness, the more energy consumption.

5. Iron clothes in bulk.

Three months ago, I listened to the heart wrenching report of an entrepreneur who said about 70% of the total cost of running her business goes to power supply.

I cried for her.

70% on power supply?❗❗❗
That's too much, na.
How would she profit?

According to her, the rise in the cost was due to the hike in diesel price.

Because of her and some entrepreneurs who run Small and Medium Enterprise requiring power supply, I will be doing a series of teachings on the following topics:

1. Generators

2. Load calculations and how to determine the most efficient size of the generator to be used for your business.

3. How to maximize every litre of diesel used.

These teachings will begin from Wednesday, 14th February, 2024-----a day when God 'no gree for' Satan. 😁😁
