COMPONENT OF THE WEEK
Honeywell BW™ MicroClip XL (also known as Gas Alert Micro Clip XL), a compact, portable multi-gas detector.
It is a personal safety instrument designed to simultaneously monitor and detect up to four atmospheric hazards in real time.
✅ Combustible gases (LEL — Lower Explosive Limit, typically 0-100% LEL or 0-5% v/v)
✅ Oxygen (O₂) (0-30% by volume)
✅ Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) (0-100 ppm)
✅ Carbon monoxide (CO) (0-500 ppm)
Common industries and use cases include
1. Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, and Refining: Monitoring for H₂S (sour gas), CO, and combustible hydrocarbons during drilling, production, maintenance, and pipeline work.
2. Confined Space Entry (e.g., tanks, vessels, sewers, manholes, silos): Mandatory in many safety protocols for pre-entry testing and continuous monitoring.
3. Construction and Tunneling: Detecting oxygen displacement, CO from equipment exhaust, or flammable vapors in trenches and enclosed sites.
4. Utilities and Electrical (e.g., vaults, substations, wastewater treatment): Identifying low O₂ or explosive gas buildup.
4. Manufacturing and Chemical Processing: Protecting against leaks or vapors from machinery, solvents, or processes.
6. Mining, Firefighting, and Emergency Response: Personal protection in a variable or hazardous atmosphere.
7. Laboratories and General Industrial Maintenance: Monitoring storage areas or workspaces for CO buildup or oxygen issues.
It is especially popular because of its affordability, ease of use (one-button navigation, automatic calibration/bump test reminders), reliability, and long shift runtime, making it suitable for daily wear by field technicians, operators, and safety personnel.
Many organizations use it as part of a broader gas detection program that includes bump testing, calibration, and fleet management software.
