GERMAN FLOOR is the mass concrete that was pour to cover the entire length and breadth of a building on the ground floor to serve as a source of additional support to the structural stability of a building.

FUNCTIONS OF GERMAN FLOOR

1. It prevents growth of plants inside the house from the soil
2. It helps the foundation in sustaining the weight of the house, prevents cracks on blockwalls because of transmission of forces applied on it spreading round the entire span of building equally
3. )It helps in preventing water from the soil from percolating to the surface thereby avoiding grow of algae around the building walls and on the floor.
4. It also helps in case of vibration,when there are engines in the house or outside that causes a lot of vibration it helps to spread the effects equally around the building to the bearest minimum.
5. It also gives good base for floor finishes like tiles,terrazzo,wood.

What causes dampness on the walls?

Most of the time dampness on wall was cause as a result of not installing the DPM (Polythene Sheet) on the the foundation, which make it open to allow Capillary action occurs when building materials soak up water from the ground it comes directly to the walls

Use of Polythene Sheet

Polythene Sheet which is called Damp Proof Membrane(DPM) in construction terminology.

Damp proof membrane (DPM) is a thin, sheet material used to prevent moisture transmission. Typically, the sheet is laid under a concrete slab to prevent the concrete from gaining moisture from the ground by capillary action. it acts as a barrier against opposing moisture to prevent rising dampness from developing in your home.
