In the transport and logistics sector, load securing is not just good practice, it's a legal requirement. Non-compliant load securing can result in fines, accidents and criminal liability.

What Namibian transporters need to know:
• All lashing equipment must be labelled with its Working Load Limit (WLL)
• The combined WLL of all lashings must be at least 50% of the load mass

Wire rope is one of the most critical components in any lifting operation and one of the most overlooked when it comes to regular inspection.

Here are the key defects to look for during wire rope inspection:
• 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀: Discard if more than 10% of wires in any rope lay are broken
• 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Internal and external rusting reduces strength significantly
• 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: A kinked rope must be removed from service immediately
• 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: Caused by torsional imbalance, indicating core damage
• 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: From improper drum winding or sheave damage
• 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: More than 3% reduction in diameter is cause for discard

If in doubt, take it out of service. A replacement wire rope costs far less than a workplace injury.

The construction sector is one of the highest-risk environments for lifting and rigging operations. Here's what every site manager and safety officer needs to know:

• In Namibia, all lifting equipment must be inspected at least every 6 months by a competent person.
• Chain slings, wire rope slings and webbing slings must all carry legible identification tags showing the WLL and date of last inspection.
• Shackle pins must always be moused (secured with wire) to prevent accidental opening under load.
