From Field to Factory: The "Comeback" Journey of a Single H**p Root
A single h**p root tells the story of rural revitalization and common prosperity in China. One county, one product: a major undertaking for high-quality development of biomass materials.
In the wrong place, it's field waste that everyone avoids; in the right field, it's a green resource worth hundreds of billions.
Every year after the summer and autumn harvests, 980 million tons of straw are generated in China's farmland.
For decades, the fate of this straw was almost always the same—burning. Smoke and fire, fines for violations, and environmental pollution. Piled up in the fields, it took up space; sold to power plants, it only fetched two or three hundred yuan per ton, not even covering labor costs.
But in 2026, the whole situation changed completely.
In Laibin, Guangxi, a prefecture-level city, sugarcane bagasse is used to make environmentally friendly tableware, with the annual output value of this single sector exceeding 3 billion yuan. In Binzhou, Shandong, wheat straw is processed into thousands of biodegradable packaging materials, sold worldwide. In Lianyungang, Jiangsu, straw undergoes three rounds of fermentation, turning into fresh button mushrooms in just 19 days; one company consumes 180,000 tons annually.
What was once universally despised as "waste" is now being transformed into a veritable money-printing machine.
🌿 Six Transformations of a Single Plant
Within the large family of plant fibers, one plant is being rediscovered—h**p.
H**p, scientifically known as *Hibiscus cannabinus*, is an annual herbaceous plant that matures in 120-150 days, yielding over 10 tons of fresh grass per acre. Its stem contains two treasures: an outer layer of high-strength bast fiber and an inner core of loose, woody parenchyma.
This means that the same plant can simultaneously feed six industries.
Hibiscus Industry Chain
▲ One hibiscus plant supports six major industrial directions
🏠 Negative Ion Coating
Plant-based raw materials replace petrochemical components
Making walls "breathe"
🐱 Plant-based Cat Litter
Natural fiber absorbs odors and deodorizes
Flushable and biodegradable
🐄 Antibiotic-free Feed
Plant protein replaces soybean meal
Natural antibacterial, zero antibiotics
🧻 Disinfecting Wipes
Plant fiber base material
Natural antibacterial, biodegradable
And that's not all. Hibiscus bast fibers can be used for textiles, papermaking, and composite materials; processing residues can be pre-treated and anaerobically fermented to produce biogas, or pyrolyzed to produce biochar to improve soil.
Not competing with humans for food, not competing with food for land, this plant utilizes all its components, from root to leaf, for high-value utilization.
📊 A trillion-dollar industry, no longer just a concept
The story of hibiscus is not a solo performance by one company.
In 2026, the national government released a series of signals:
🔹 The 15th Five-Year Plan listed bio-based materials as a strategic emerging category, with a target production capacity exceeding 50 million tons;
🔹 Seventeen provinces across the country have issued special plans for the bio-based industry, with a total planned investment exceeding 2.3 trillion yuan;
🔹 The Central Government's No. 1 Document explicitly stated the need to "comprehensively improve the comprehensive utilization capacity of straw," with a focus on supporting the industrialization of bio-based new materials;
🔹 Provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Guangdong have mandated the use of bio-based coatings in public construction projects.
More importantly, the cost inflection point has arrived.
According to industry data, the price difference between bio-based materials and similar petrochemical materials narrowed to less than 10% in 2026, and is expected to narrow further by 2030. When "green" no longer means "expensive," substitution is only a matter of time.
"The core profit margins of the current bio-based materials industry chain are gradually shifting to the midstream and downstream. Projects with an integrated layout of 'raw materials + technology + end-use applications' have significant advantages in policy application, financing, and market competition." — *The 15th Five-Year Plan Investment Guide for Bio-based Materials Projects*
The hibiscus industry possesses this "integrated" gene—from breeding and planting to extraction, processing, and finally to end-consumer products, the entire industry chain is closed-loop and controllable.
🌍 From "burning" to "growing," the Chinese solution is taking shape. Looking globally, the plant fiber new materials sector is entering a historic window of opportunity.
The EU's Packaging Waste Regulation mandates that packaging materials contain 30% bio-based components by 2030; global plastic restriction policies continue to intensify, creating a demand gap of over 4.2 million tons for bio-based biodegradable materials. As one of the world's largest plant fiber resource countries, China is transforming from a "follower" to a "leader."
A team from the University of Science and Technology of China extracted furan-based new materials from straw, breaking the foreign monopoly and winning the first prize of Anhui Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award; Hanhe Biotechnology utilized all components of straw for high-value utilization, attracting tens of millions of yuan in investment from national industrial capital; Suihua City plans to build a "green oilfield," with green methanol production capacity jumping to 300,000-500,000 tons within five years…
From fields to factories, from waste to new materials, a completely new industrial chain is growing across China.
Green Future
▲ Plant fibers are rewriting China's materials landscape. How far can a blade of grass go?
From farmland to coatings, from waste to cat litter,
From field waste to the core raw material of a trillion-yuan industry.
Misplaced waste is garbage; found in the right industry, it's a resource.
This is the answer from China's biomass new materials industry.
