It goes a long way.

Nenek is 82 years old and fishes almost every day at Sembawang park wading the shoreline and throwing a jala (cast net ) in her baju kurong (and water moccasins)!
She takes a bus and MRT all the way from Marsiling.

“Tak ambil Ikan balek, ta cukup orang masak di rumah- hobi saja la” ( I don’t take fish home, not enough people there to cook them - this is just a hobby) she says smiling.

“ Sometimes there are 1-2 kilo siakap ( sea bass ) hiding near the shore in murky water, all kinds of fish “ she says with the enthusiasm and knowledge of a keen fisherwoman.

It’s a style of fishing that requires, balance, skill and stamina - difficult even for a younger man, but for a seasoned practitioner like nenek it can be very effective.

Even puasa fasting doesn’t stop her. “ I’m still strong enough to do this every day - Allahamdullilah” she says with heartfelt gratitude.
