We would like to inform you that Carlos Mendez Galindo, our Regional President for Latin America, has decided to leave mageba Group and continue with his professional development on a different path.

We thank Carlos for his extraordinary contributions over the past 13 years at mageba, not only by helping expand the seismic protection business around the world, but also for helping us growing our presence in Latin America.

To ensure continuity in the leadership of mageba in the region, we have promoted Carlos Gidi Casas to the new General Manager of mageba Latin America.

With a solid 10-year successful experience at Hilti, Carlos Gidi joined mageba almost two years ago as Operations Manager for Latin America. Throughout his tenure, he has proven to be a consistent and dependable leader, ensuring projects such as the new airport in Mexico City, one of the largest isolated buildings in the world, was completed on time and on budget.

We are confident that Carlos Gidi will be an excellent leader for the entire mageba Latin America team. Our global CEO, Gianni Moor, will take over the role of Regional President for Latin America, and he will support Carlos Gidi at all times.

We are convinced that Carlos Gidi’s new position will help mageba to successfully continue promoting and implementing reliable and effective structural engineering solutions in Latin America.

We congratulate Dr. Carlos Mendez Galindo for being re-elected on October 19th, 2021 as Vice President of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). This will allow him to continue promoting and helping develop IABSE during his second 4 year term.

In his 1st term, Carlos was able to establish and strengthen several National Groups, especially in Latin America. In addition, he managed to pass a new membership fee initiative so that IABSE can be more accessible to developing countries. Through these platforms, it was possible to hold conferences, seminars and technical meetings, helping IABSE to fulfill its mission to “exchange knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide in the service of the profession”.

We are convinced that the leadership skills of Carlos will help IABSE to continue to grow in all regions around the globe and continue to be an attractive platform not only for experienced professionals but also young engineers just starting their career.

mageba is proud to be part of the first seismically isolated building in the City of Guatemala, and one of the first in Central America: Elemento Building. We had the opportunity to design and manufacture the isolators, as well as supervise the installation of these devices. Special thanks to Grupo ORIGO and Dr. Hector Monzon and his team at Sismoconsult for allowing us to be part of this historic project. Thank you also to our team at mageba Latin America and to our partner Megaproductos, Great work everyone!

An incredible bridge in the USA – the Bayonne Bridge – connects the city of Bayonne in New Jersey with Staten Island, New York, measuring 5,780 feet (1,762 m) in length.

Between 2013 and 2019 the bridge underwent a spectacular redesign, as its deck was raised 64 feet (20 m) from 151 to 215 feet (46 to 66 m). This physical alteration to the bridge deck within the original steel arch was required to allow New Panamax ships to travel the Kill Van Kull strait – one of the busiest waterways in the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Today, we would like to look back on this extraordinary project, on which we had the honor of supplying both modular expansion joints and sliding finger joints.

mageba has a prominent history in providing key bridge components for various crossings of the Danube River.

In fact, the Danube crossing is just one out of a number of structures on the D4/R7 highway project for which mageba is supplying a wide range of products, including bearings and expansion joints of various types.

This project, however, was remarkable and it immediately became a matter of the heart for our colleagues at mageba Slovakia s. r. o. (Ltd.). Learning that the new bridge in the south of Bratislava requires the country’s biggest expansion joints so far, the team was excited to contribute their know-how to the structure of the country’s D4 motorway forming a part of the Trans-European Transport Network and is therefore of international importance.

Since the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York was mentioned in last week’s article on the replacement of the finger joints at the George Washington Bridge, you may also want to read additional details about our Verrazzano project.

In a nutshell, the largest of the joints for the double-decked suspension bridge accommodate deck movements of 2,700 mm (approx. 9 ft). That makes them the largest-movement finger joints ever supplied by mageba.

Another fact about the bridge’s name: On October 1, 2018, Governor Cuomo signed the change of the legal spelling of the bridge to the "Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge" into law after the name had been spelled with one “z” since March 1960.
