Sun Visor Extension
Most K5 owners may know this but there will still be some who don't. With the sun shining thru the window pane (driver's side), we fold down our sun visor from its original position & pull it to the side window for shade. We can then pull out the entire visor further to extend the shade. Simple but can be effective.

Pressing the Start/Stop button in a moving car.
What happens when the start/stop button is accidentally pressed (eg. by children) when the car is moving? Here's the result:
When you press the start/stop button & quickly let go (abt 1 sec), nothing will happen. The car continues as normal. However, if you press the button & hold it for abt 3 secs, the engine dies. The brake still works (not sure about the abs) & you should be able to stop the car safely.
When the engine dies & with the car still in motion, you cannot restart the engine by pressing the button again. However, the engine can be restarted (with the car still moving) if u shift the gear to N before pressing the start button. The other safer way is to stop the car totally and then restart as normal.
The above is for info during emergency cases only. Please do not try it under normal or uncontrolled situations.

Checking out your reverse light
You're on the road & wanted to check whether your reverse light is working or you wanted to show your new light to a friend.
Off the engine. Press the start button. Press it a second time without stepping on the brakes. Engage the reverse gear (pic 1). Now exit the car & check out your reverse lights (pics 2 & 3). Remember to disengage the reverse gear when you finish.
Simple but effective. Have a nice day!

K5 Auto light function (what you should know).
When you turn the auto light function on & switch off the engine, the lights turn itself off after 30 secs (nice feature).
You can also turn off the headlights before the 30 secs is up by pressing unlock on the fob, then lock. The lights will go off straight away. Alternatively you can press the black button on the door handle to unlock & press again to lock. The lights go off.
However this works only if you exit by the driver side door. It will not work if you exit the car with the engine on, walk over to the passenger side (like showing the car's functions to a friend), open the front passenger door & reach over to off the engine. In this case, your lights will stay on & you may end up with a flat battery.

Car batteries for K5
Typically a battery can last from 18 to 30 months and it is advisable to change a 30 month old battery even though it appears to be still working. Old batteries can affect your car adversely, so it is advisable to replace it before it gives you problems, not after.
Signs of a weak battery include:
1. engine cranks and starts with difficulty
2. engine starts fine one day and problematic the next
3. wiper function slower, headlights dimmer, horn softer, etc.
The majority of car batteries have 6 cells, each giving 2.1 volts for a total of 12.6 volts fully charged. The important parameters to note are:
1. cca/ca - amount of current the battery can provide at 0F/32F (minimum 600 for K5)
2. Ah - ampere hours on how many amps can be discharged in a 20hr period
3. RC - reserve capacity - measured in minutes showing how long your battery can power your car's vital components should the alternator or system fail.
Please note that the best battery is not the one with all the highest ratings but has to be compatible with your car's specs, above or below which can harm the car's electrical system.
For our K5, the suitable battery that can be used include 80D26L or 70D26L. The smaller 55D23L can be considered. The meanings of the different nomenclature are as follows:
a) 55/70/80 is the capacity (amount of ampere hours)
b) D refers to the standard terminal (B=small terminal, E=long batteries)
c) 23/26 refers to the battery length in cm
d) L means the negative terminal is on the left, R is on the right
Note that American batteries have different codes.
The battery in the pic above has RC of 130 mins, cca of 620 and AH of 20 hours.
Batteries also have a label showing the month & year it is manufactured. Some companies use a code instead, a letter for month and a number for year, viz. 5K14 means 14 Nov 2015.

Operating Power Windows with Engine Off
When your engine is off, you can still operate the power windows by pressing twice on the Start button. There is another way without touching thatt button. The moment you turn off the engine, there is a 30 second interval where all 4 windows are still operable. Within those 30 sec and with the engine off, the K5 allows you to use the power windows as normal even though power is presumably off. However, after 30 sec if your window pane is half way down, it will stay that way and you will have to restart your engine or press twice on the start button to raise it up again.

Tyre rotation is followed by balancing & wheel alignment. For NU engines, there is one more procedure needed which most are either not aware or neglected to do. This is the ASP calibration.
The NU K5 comes installed with MDPS (motor driven power steering) or EPS (electric power steering). This being the case, there is a need to carry out the ASP (absolute steering position) calibration after every wheel alignment change. The ASP is set to zero and is done electronically via the OBD under the steering. The actual setting takes just 5 mins & can be done at any Kia SC.
