RLAUTIER is proud to be supporting Sculptor Francesca Balzan’s Solo Exhibition

NOW OPEN at the National Library of Malta, Valletta, Francesca Balzan’s solo exhibition Incunabula 1474–2025, curated by Justine Balzan Demajo, presents a new collection of sculptures. The exhibition bridges the historical and the contemporary through an innovative sculpture installation, inspired by the National Library’s collection of early printed books; the 15th century incunabula. The base of these sculptures is 3D printed in porcelain, and from there, Francesca’s hand takes over, completely manipulating and reshaping the form to give each sculpture an individual character. The contrast between the precise lines created by the printer and the distinct, sometimes rough yet delicate features moulded by Francesca creates an engaging dialogue. One that highlights the coexistence between the digital and the handmade, reminding us that, even in an age of rapid technological progress, the human hand and mind remain profoundly relevant, and can, in many ways, still overpower the machine.

Incunabula 1474–2025 runs till 12th December, 2025 at the National Library of Malta, Valletta. Entrance is free. Monday – Friday, 830am - 430pm, Saturday until 1230pm.

Notes from Tom Van Malderen :

I’ve long been fascinated by how we process marble — such an organic material — in industrial, efficient, and ‘square’ ways. Modernism gave us a taste for the sleek and rectangular, what the design world likes to call ‘sexy’. The painted accents in blue refer to another hallmark of modernism: colour-coding, while still allowing a trace of the hand — a small gesture of uniqueness. With these thin marble sticks, I wanted to push the material — and the manufacturer — to the limit, creating forms that are both fragile and precise. These sticks also speak of our mastery over nature and the processing of something that was formed long before we humans were even around. This work reminds me of a striking ambiguity: the tension between the damage such mastery entails and the irresistible beauty it still produces.


About Tom Van Malderen -

Malta-based architect Tom Van Malderen works at the intersection of art, design, and architecture. His projects reflect a fascination with how we inhabit space and how its objects and materials are embedded in an intricate web of cultural references. By reimagining familiar forms and structures, he invites reflection on form, meaning, and narrative. Van Malderen’s work creates spaces and situations that explore the fictions and frictions of our built environment—its politics, its history, its material presence, and the tension between the real and the imagined.

After completing a Master’s in Architecture at Sint-Lucas, KU Leuven, Van Malderen worked with Atelier Lucien Kroll in Brussels and AP Valletta in both London and Malta. In 2018, he established his own studio while continuing as Director of Management at AP Valletta, allowing him to further develop his practice across visual art and design, and engage with several NGOs.

We’re delighted to have partnered with Valentino Architects on the VIP Terminal project at Malta International Airport, which has been honoured with the Hospitality Design Award and the President’s Award at the 2025 edition of the Premju Emanuele Luigi Galizia.
These awards, presented by the Kamra tal‑Periti, Malta’s national body for architects and civil engineers, celebrate excellence across the built environment, with emphasis this year on sustainability, adaptive reuse and high-quality design that leaves a meaningful legacy.

We are honoured to see our materials play a part in such an inspiring project one that contributes meaningfully to Maltese architecture and design, and where thoughtful materiality, craftsmanship and context-sensitive design are clearly evident.
