In 2014 the BELAZ-75710 became the largest dump truck in the world (and it is really, really big) It delivers it's staggering 450mt payload capacity by using 8 massive tires each designed for about 100 tons of load. It is over 20 meters long, nearly 10 meters wide and eight meters high. The turning diameter of this dump truck is about 20 meters and it has a maximum speed of approximately 64kms per hour (about 40 mph). The Liebherr T 282 B although king of the trucks no longer, is still a seriously big dump truck. It is driven by a 90 litre diesel engine capable of producing 3650 horsepower, which weighs approximately ten and a half tons. The price for one of these trucks is about $ 3.5 million dollars (U.S.). The truck is actually a hybrid as its diesel engine powers two electric engines that are located in the rear axle of the truck. At about 60,000 operating hours the T 282 B uses approximately 2 million litres of fuel. It stands at 7.84 meters tall (25 feet) and 14.5 metres long (48 feet). The Caterpillar 797B is designed specifically for high-production mining and construction sites. It is 7.6 metres high empty and 14.5 metres long and costs between cost: $5 million to $6 million. A single tire for the 797B costs more than $35,000, is four metres high and weighs over 15,000 kilograms. the truck is so large that so large it can't be driven on the highway, so it is taken in pieces to the job site and assembled there. On On February 19, 2010, the Terex Unit Rig MT 6300AC was re-branded as the Bucyrus MT 6300AC when Terex sold its mining equipment division to Bucyrus International Inc. for $1.3 billion (USD). The MT6300 stands at 7.92 meters tall (26 feet) and 15.5 metres long (51 feet). The truck is priced between 4 to 5 million dollars. These trucks known as "Ultra Class" trucks, some of which, can be driven by remote control are off-road haul trucks. They are used strictly for mining and heavy dirt hauling jobs. The more appropriate term in the construction industry for this vehicle is, 'Haul' truck, and not 'dump' truck as they are sometimes called. The Caterpillar 797B is referred to as a mechanical truck since it uses a large diesel engine (sometimes two engines) and large transmissions to power the rear wheels. These types of monster trucks can use about 1 gallon (or 3.8 litres) of fuel every 30 seconds. The Liebherr T 282 B, which was designed by electrical engineer Francis Bartley, is referred to as a Diesel-Electric Truck because it uses a diesel engine linked to an alternator that generates electricity which is converted to AC and is used to power two giant electric motors found on the rear wheel assemblies, similar to a train locomotive. It's also known as a series plug-in hybrid (at 2700 Kw). Siemens provides the two AC induction motors for the rear axle, engine mounted generator and the solid state computer controlled power inverters that have been proven over millions of operating hours in train locomotives. Not only is the AC drive system lighter than either mechanical or DC transmission systems, they provide faster acceleration and a higher top speed. According to Bartley about 50 to 75 trucks are sold each year worldwide in the over-300-ton range.
