Please Have Some Empathy
Another batch of Myanmar seafarers has reportedly arrived here again. An Indian crew member who recently signed off told me the same thing: Iran is a really terrible place to work. Ask anyone who has returned from Iran; they'll tell you the truth.
It's not even a proper war zone, yet it's certainly not a place offering high salaries, either. There isn't even adequate safety. Even the PPE is substandard. The boiler suits are cheap Chinese-made ones. We don't feel like seafarers here; we're treated more like fishermen (discrimination?). There are no fixed working hours. They wake you up whenever they want. As for food, Iranians have their own cuisine, but foreign crew members are basically served nothing but beans, potatoes, and yoghurt.
When I first arrived, our vessel was in dry dock at Sadra Port. I met two Myanmar seafarers around my age, in their twenties. They had already been there for ten months. I asked how things were going, and they simply said, "It's just like this."
Their vessel was a tugboat, even smaller than ours. They signed a contract for one type of vessel, but when they arrived, they found themselves assigned to a tugboat instead. The ship they ended up on was completely different from the one specified in their contract. Their contract was for one year.
Among the Pakistani, Indian, and Myanmar seafarers working in Iran, Myanmar workers suffer the most. Even if Indian seafarers receive only $100 in salary, their agency back in India reportedly adds another $150. Their recruitment fee is only about $1,000. Pakistani workers also pay only around five lakhs (in their own currency), and they receive salaries of around $250. But Myanmar seafarers are in the worst position of all.
Not long ago, around twenty Myanmar workers reportedly arrived here. Some of them discovered that the salary was different from what the Myanmar agents had promised, so they chose to return home immediately. I doubt they'll ever get their recruitment fees back.
If you somehow make it here and still have enough money to return home, go back before signing the contract. There is nothing good waiting for you here. Once you're on board, if you decide you can't continue and want to leave, you'll be required to pay US$1,100. At that point, all you can do is endure and keep working.
After completing nine months, I told the Iranian agent that I wanted to sign off. His response was that if I left the ship, he couldn't guarantee whether I would receive my wages or not. He said he simply didn't know. As for my Myanmar agent, he stopped replying to my messages as soon as I arrived in Iran.
If you're thinking about taking a job advertised as being in the UAE, don't. Most likely you'll actually end up in Iran. If you're looking for sea service, choose another flag state. Iran is by far the worst flag to work under.
I genuinely don't want my fellow Myanmar seafarers to come here. Many agents have no empathy. They only care about collecting their commissions. (I'm not referring to the good, responsible agents who genuinely help people.)
Those agents have husbands, brothers, sons, and other family members too. Would they really send their own children into a place like this—a conflict zone? Can't they put themselves in our shoes?
We have families waiting for us too. About three months ago, my mother couldn't contact me because there was no phone signal. She was so worried that she barely ate. When I finally got a signal, I told her, "Mom, don't worry. I'm doing fine."
If I told my family how bad things really are, it would only cause them more pain.
As far as I know, this is the current situation in Iran. Iran has strained relations with the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar. Around four months ago, Israel launched missile attacks that killed one of Iran's senior leaders, who was already elderly. The Iranian people loved him deeply. Every day, people gather in major cities not to protest against war, but to demand retaliation. People are dying every day. Missiles strike daily. Iran retaliates with missile attacks of its own. We see all of this on television every day. Even when the United States proposed a ceasefire, Iran reportedly refused. Conditions in Iran's cities are becoming increasingly severe.
To my fellow Myanmar seafarers, please don't come to Iran. Those of us already here have no choice but to carry on because it's too late to turn back. I don't want anyone else to suffer what we're going through. The agents take no responsibility whatsoever. The compensation they promise exists only in their words. There are even workers who have had to wait two or three months just to receive their wages.
To all my brothers already in Iran, please stay safe.
The days here feel unbearably long.

ကျွန်တော်ဒီစရောက်ခါစက Sadraဆိပ်ကမ်းမှာ သဘော်ဒေါက်ဝင်နေတုန်း မြန်မာနှစ်ယောက်နဲ့တွေ့တယ်ကျွန်တော်နဲ့ ရွယ်တူလောက်ပါပဲ ၂၀ဝန်းကျင် တွေသူတို့က၁၀ လ ရှိပြီတဲ့အဆင်ပြေလားဆိုတော့ဒီလိုပါပဲတဲ့ သူတို့သဘော်က tag boat ကိုယ့်သဘော်ထက်သေးတယ် အီရန်မှာစာချုပ်ချုပ်တော့သဘော်က တစ်စီးတဲ့ ရောက်လာတော့ tag boatတဲ့ စာချုပ်နဲ့သဘော်ကမတူဘူးတဲ့ တစ်နှစ်စာချုပ်တဲ့။
အီရန်ရောက်တဲ့ထဲမှာ Pakistan India Myanmar အဲ့ထဲမှာမြန်မာက အနစ်နာဆုံးပဲ India တွေက လစာတစ်ရာပဲရရင်တောင် သူတို့ Indiaရုံးက 150ထပ်ပေးတယ်တဲ့ရိုက်ကြေးကလည်း 1000လောက်ပဲရှိတယ် Pakistan တွေလည်း 5ရွက်ပဲပေးရတယ်သူတို့ကျလစာ၂၅၀ကိုယ့်တွေမြန်မာ တွေပဲအဆိုးဆုံး။
