At the Toronto Building Expo, we shared a brief — slightly light-hearted — 20-second address.

We arrived having just expanded our production capacity, ready for conversations shaped by durability, performance, and real climate demands.

Last Friday we joined RTU - Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte (Riga Technical University) Zinātnieku nakts (Researchers’ Night) — an evening when science steps outside the lab and into children’s hands.

REBARMAT had the chance to stand shoulder to shoulder with Knauf Latvija — a partner we respect greatly — to show the next generation that construction materials are not only concrete and steel, but also glass fibre, chemistry and innovation.

What stood out was not the technical side, but the fun and questions from children: Why is it lighter? Will it last longer? Can we bend it? — the type of questions that, frankly, many adults in our industry should keep asking as well.

Events like these remind us why we do what we do: building safer, longer-lasting infrastructure is ultimately about the world these children will inherit.

Reuters (Aug 11, 2025) warns: recycling alone won’t build Europe’s future infrastructure.

Europe’s push for low-carbon steel is essential. But the Reuters analysis shows a clear risk — relying too heavily on recycled steel could slow progress. Scrap currently meets only about 32% of demand and is unlikely to exceed 46% by 2050. With Electric Arc Furnaces using around 71% scrap, shortages could hit well before the decade is out.

Recycling will always be part of the solution. But it can’t carry the whole load. To make infrastructure truly sustainable and long-lasting, we need a smarter mix: recycled steel where it’s best suited, and innovative materials like GFRP — lightweight, corrosion-proof, and able to perform for decades with minimal maintenance.

It’s not about replacing steel everywhere. It’s about choosing the right material for the right job, reducing lifetime emissions, and building infrastructure that stands the test of time.
