This bird feeder is one of those objects that makes photogrammetry sweat: two wire cages, one tucked inside the other, built from thin, shiny metal that mostly hides the inner cage from view. Normally that means a lot of slow, manual cleanup to get a usable model.

This one started as a single 60-second iPhone video, no scanner and no photo rig. In Artec Studio 20, AI Photogrammetry pulled the frames straight from the footage and rebuilt the model. A bounding box kept just the feeder, the Small-object filter tidied up the stray fragments, and what came out is a fully textured model of both cages and the suet inside.

A multi-level, reflective bird feeder with narrow geometry and features difficult to track. Normally, very tricky to scan. When it's all about realism rather than precise dimensions, AI Photogrammetry in Artec Studio handles tricky surfaces.

Patrick Thorn, Artec's long-standing partner, captured the feeder with minimal setup, just an iPhone and 60 seconds of video. He uploaded the video to Artec Studio, where photo data was automatically extracted and stitched together to form a unified model. With the boundary box adjusted and hole-filling and bridging used to fill small gaps around the feeder's handle, the result was a complete, watertight 3D representation in minutes.

When digitizing a massive heritage site like Odawara Castle park, the challenge is capturing everything from a 9-kilometer perimeter down to the finest historic details. On a sprawling project of this scale, natural environments such as trees, rivers, and larger connecting spaces often offer valuable site context but don't need to be captured with high accuracy. Artec Jet was perfect for picking up this sort of background information, generating a continuous point cloud and connecting the site's more interesting features: historic walls, ornate roofs, and courtyards around the castle.

Unlike Ray II, which scans from static viewpoints, Jet could also be maneuvered into difficult-to-reach areas. Both scanners are less accurate than Leo, but that's why it's best to combine datasets, for peak results. In this case, Ray II was deployed to scan the inner courtyard and gate, with Leo being used to pick up smaller details like the confined area behind the entrance.
