One of the most overlooked aspects in retaining wall design is not strength โ€” but drainage.
Many structural failures are caused not by weak concrete or steel, but by uncontrolled water pressure behind the wall.

Retaining walls donโ€™t fail because of concrete โ€” they fail because of poor drainage.
This simple comparison clearly shows why proper drainage using gravel and pipes is critical to prevent hydrostatic pressure and structural failure.

A small detail in design can make a massive difference in performance and safety.
Always design with drainage in mind. ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ—๏ธ

As part of my continuous learning and practice in Structural Engineering, I recently completed a Reinforced Concrete (RC) Column Design example based on standard design principles.

๐Ÿ“Œ The design includes:

โ€ข Selection of column size
โ€ข Reinforcement detailing
โ€ข Check for safety and serviceability
โ€ข Compliance with relevant design codes

This exercise helped me strengthen my understanding of how structural elements safely transfer loads and ensure durability and stability in buildings.

๐Ÿ”น Site Observation โ€“ Septic Tank Construction

During the ongoing construction of a septic tank, I observed the importance of internal plastering in protecting the brickwork. In this project, the plastering was done using a
๐Ÿ:๐Ÿ• ๐œ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ-๐ฌ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐š๐ซ, which effectively reduces the dissolution of the brickwork by providing a protective coating.

However, based on practical experience and engineering standards, a richer mix such as 1:4 or 1:5 is recommended for ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ - ๐ซ๐ž๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž like septic tanks. This ensures better impermeability, minimizes seepage, and increases durability against chemical attack from wastewater.

To enhance performance:
- Add a ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ to the plaster mix.
- Maintain ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  for at least 7 days.
- Apply a cement slurry or ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐œ๐จ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  as a finishing layer on the inner faces.

This practical observation highlights how small mix design changes can significantly improve the service life and durability of masonry structures exposed to constant moisture.
